github

A guide for using the GitHub command-line tool, which lets you manage repositories, issues, pull requests, and automated checks from a terminal. It explains commands for viewing CI results and making advanced GitHub API queries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect issues, pull requests, CI runs, failed logs, repository data, and other GitHub information with the gh command.
Why use it?
It provides the correct command patterns for checking project work and automation results. It also avoids querying the wrong repository when the current folder does not identify one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00044 $0.00447
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00224
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00045

Security

Grade A, and why

github scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

GitHub Skill

Use the gh CLI to interact with GitHub. Always specify --repo owner/repo when not in a git directory, or use URLs directly.

Important:

  • There is no dedicated gh tool.
  • Use the shell/exec command tool to run gh ... commands.
  • Do not emit a tool call named gh.
  • If shell execution is unavailable or needs approval, say that clearly and ask for the missing permission/input.

Pull Requests

Check CI status on a PR:

gh pr checks 55 --repo owner/repo

List recent workflow runs:

gh run list --repo owner/repo --limit 10

View a run and see which steps failed:

gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo

View logs for failed steps only:

gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo --log-failed

API for Advanced Queries

The gh api command is useful for accessing data not available through other subcommands.

Get PR with specific fields:

gh api repos/owner/repo/pulls/55 --jq '.title, .state, .user.login'

JSON Output

Most commands support --json for structured output. You can use --jq to filter:

gh issue list --repo owner/repo --json number,title --jq '.[] | "\(.number): \(.title)"'
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

github is a skill published in the GitHub repository kaivyy/kabot (20 stars, last pushed 5mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 44 tokens to every session and 447 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
