eli-save

eli-save is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from kavyabhand/claude-eli5. It costs 56 tokens per session (419 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool that collects the session’s ELI5 explanations and saves them in a Markdown file, a plain-text document format.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for exporting explanations from the current session to eli5-notes.md, adding a header, and appending to an existing file when present.
Why use it?
It keeps useful explanations for later reference instead of leaving them only in the conversation.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00056 $0.00419
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00210
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00042

Measured 6d ago against content hash f7de7ef45c6b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

eli-save scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

ELI5 Save — Export Session Explanations

Save every eli5-mode explanation from this session to eli5-notes.md.

Steps

  1. Review the full conversation history for this session.

  2. Identify every response where you gave an eli5-mode explanation. Collect: the topic/question, the level used, the explanation text.

  3. Check if eli5-notes.md already exists:

    test -f eli5-notes.md && echo "exists" || echo "new"

  4. Write (or append) to eli5-notes.md using this format:

---
saved: [current date and time]
session: [number of explanations in this batch]
---

## [Topic or question]
**Level:** [eli5 / eli-kid / eli-teen / eli-adult / eli-expert]

[The explanation, cleaned up if needed but faithful to what was given]

---

If the file already exists, append below the last --- separator. If new, create with a header:

# ELI5 Notes
Plain-language explanations saved from Claude Code sessions.
  1. After writing, confirm: "Saved [N] explanation(s) to eli5-notes.md."

If in eli5 mode: give that confirmation at the current level's style.

Edge cases

  • If no eli5 explanations were given in this session: say so and don't create a file.
  • If the user specifies a filename: use that instead of eli5-notes.md.
  • Strip any code blocks or shell commands from explanations — save only the human-readable text.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
