compass-calendar: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/simplify/SKILL.md

simplify is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from KeepSoftwareSimple/compass-calendar. It costs 55 tokens per session (1,058 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A code-cleanup reviewer for changed Compass code. It looks for duplicated code, unnecessary complexity, weak boundaries, and excessive use of React state or effects, while keeping behavior unchanged.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when asked to simplify code, remove duplication, reduce complexity, or improve maintainability in a branch or selected feature.
Why use it?
It helps make code easier to maintain without turning the task into an unrelated rewrite. It also keeps the repository's existing conventions in place.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents); mentions AGENTS.md.

This is KeepSoftwareSimple/compass-calendar's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on compass-calendar itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything compass-calendar configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.01058
Opus 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00423
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00212
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00106

Security

Grade A, and why

simplify scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 148 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

When

Asked to simplify, clean up, or make DRY; also the nightly cleanup sweep.

Steps

High-value detectors, then Compass conventions, then Verify.

Output

Behavior-preserving diff; separate commit when files change.

Pass

No behavior change; conventions from AGENTS.md kept.

Anti-patterns

Do not “improve” by rewriting unrelated files. See anti-patterns.md.

Escalate

A simplification that would change public behavior or contracts.

Simplify Compass code

Favor the smallest, clearest implementation. This is a quality pass, not a correctness or security review.

Scope

  • Default to the complete branch diff against its base. Honor a narrower file or feature scope when the user names one.
  • Preserve behavior. Do not expand into unrelated cleanup.
  • Find existing abstractions before creating new ones.
  • If an inspected pattern should stay, state why.

High-value detectors

Inspect in this order:

  1. Largest churn — start where the diff added the most code and branches.
  2. Repeated scaffolding — extract one helper only when the shared intent and parameter surface are clear.
  3. Test-only production hooks — prefer narrow dependency injection over registries or environment branches added only for tests.
  4. Casts and broad mocks — reshape the seam instead of hiding type or process-global coupling.
  5. Dead exports and unreachable guards — verify call sites and invariants, then delete misleading code.
  6. Hidden shared state — fix ownership/reset/injection rather than test ordering or timeouts.
  7. Comments explaining mechanics — simplify the mechanism; retain comments that document constraints the code cannot express.

Do not unify code that only looks similar or break a repo-wide convention in one file merely to remove repetition.

Principles

Minimal surface

  • Add only what the current requirement needs.
  • Prefer direct, boring code over generic machinery.
  • Delete indirection that does not clarify ownership or contracts.
  • Keep one responsibility per function and React component.
  • Use guard clauses over nested conditionals.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

simplify is a skill published in the GitHub repository KeepSoftwareSimple/compass-calendar (226 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 55 tokens to every session and 1,058 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-07.
