instruments-profiling-pro

instruments-profiling-pro is a skill for Claude Code from kelvinkosbab/AppBootstrapAI. It costs 101 tokens per session (771 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command-line guide for profiling Apple-platform apps with xctrace, the terminal interface to Apple's Instruments performance tool.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to record or inspect traces, find expensive code paths, investigate freezes, and compare a proposed performance fix.
Why use it?
It helps replace guesses about slow screens or hangs with trace data, call trees, and before-and-after measurements.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00101 $0.00771
Opus 5.5 $0.00040 $0.00308
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00154
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00077

Security

Grade A, and why

instruments-profiling-pro scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 38 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Find out where an app spends time, using xctrace, Instruments' command-line interface, so an agent can record and read traces without the Instruments UI.

Sources. Grounded in Apple's Instruments documentation and in the xctrace skill Apple bundles with Xcode 27, which Artem Novichkov extracted and published in artemnovichkov/xcode-skills. The guidance is rewritten and condensed for this bundle, not copied. xctrace changes between Xcode releases: refresh the command surface with xctrace help before relying on any flag here.

Process:

  1. State the question first: which interaction is slow, on which device and build, and what "fixed" means (a number). Profile a Release-like build on a real device; the simulator and Debug builds mislead.
  2. Record or open the trace and explore it with references/xctrace.md (toc → list tracks → show).
  3. For freezes and hangs, triage with references/hangs.md before reading call trees.
  4. Find the heaviest path in the call tree, map it to source, and propose one change.
  5. Measure again with the same template, device, and steps, and report before / after numbers.

Core Instructions

  • Measure, don't guess. Every claim about a hot spot cites a track and a number from the trace.
  • Keep output readable. triage prints hundreds of lines and show can print far more. Redirect to a file in the scratch directory and read slices; never stream a whole call tree into context.
  • Symbolicate before reading. Hex addresses mean the dSYM didn't match (dwarfdump --uuid on both sides).
  • One change per measurement. Two fixes in one run hide which one helped.
  • Cross-reference: memory growth and leaks go to swift-memory-storage-pro; main-actor and Task structure to swift-concurrency-pro; SwiftUI invalidation to swiftui-pro; signposts for custom intervals to swift-logging-pro (OSSignposter).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
