odyssey: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/data-fetching/SKILL.md

data-fetching is a skill for Claude Code from KhourySpecialProjects/odyssey. It costs 39 tokens per session (1,522 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project-specific instructions for retrieving data, caching it, and clearing outdated cached results. It distinguishes read requests from changes that update data.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps build Strapi API request functions, choose fields to load, add cache settings, debug stale data, and implement server-side actions that change data.
Why use it?
Inconsistent data access can cause stale pages, overly broad responses, or mutations that bypass the project's expected patterns. The guidance gives developers a repeatable way to add request functions and cache tags.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00039 $0.01522
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00609
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00304
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00152

Security

Grade A, and why

data-fetching scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Data Fetching Patterns for Odyssey

The Golden Rule

All Strapi GET requests go through fetchAPI() in lib/utils.ts. All mutations go through Server Actions in lib/actions.ts using raw fetch().

Writing a New Request Function

Template

// lib/requests/{content-type}.ts
import { fetchAPI } from "@/lib/utils";
import { CACHE_TAGS } from "@/lib/cache-tags";

export async function getThingsByFilter(filterValue: string): Promise<Thing[]> {
  return fetchAPI<Thing[]>("/things", {
    urlParams: {
      filters: { field: { $eq: filterValue } },
      populate: {
        // Only populate what you render
        relation: { fields: ["name", "slug"] },
      },
      sort: ["name:asc"],
    },
    next: { tags: [CACHE_TAGS.things], revalidate: 900 },
  });
}

Checklist Before Writing

  1. Read the schema first: backend/src/api/{type}/content-types/{type}/schema.json
  2. Check if a similar function exists: Grep for the content type in lib/requests/
  3. Choose the right cache tag: Check lib/cache-tags.ts for existing tags
  4. Decide on populate depth: Only populate fields you'll render. Never populate: "*"

Cache Tag System

Tag Types

Global tags — shared across all users:

CACHE_TAGS.droplets; // all droplet queries
CACHE_TAGS.playlists; // all playlist queries
CACHE_TAGS.lesson; // all lesson queries
CACHE_TAGS.tags; // all tag queries
CACHE_TAGS.announcements; // feed queries
CACHE_TAGS.users; // user listing queries
CACHE_TAGS.allEnrollments; // admin enrollment views

Per-user tags — scoped to individual users:

CACHE_TAGS.enrollments(userId); // "enrollments-{userId}"
CACHE_TAGS.friendships(userId); // "friendships-{userId}"
CACHE_TAGS.notes(userId); // "notes-{userId}"
CACHE_TAGS.highlights(userId); // "highlights-{userId}"

Adding a New Cache Tag

  1. Add the constant to lib/cache-tags.ts
  2. Use it in the request function's next.tags
  3. Add revalidateTag() call in every Server Action that mutates this data
  4. If per-user scoped, use the function form: CACHE_TAGS.myTag(userId)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

data-fetching is a skill published in the GitHub repository KhourySpecialProjects/odyssey (7 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 39 tokens to every session and 1,522 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-02.
