free2pa-protect-agent

free2pa-protect-agent is a skill for Codex from kilroyblockchain/free2pa-devtool. It costs 74 tokens per session (1,244 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A protection workflow for agent applications and their control files, such as prompts, policies, and startup settings. Free2PA adds signed receipts and trust checks so changes can be detected before the application loads them.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for inspecting an agent project, identifying control files, setting up provenance checks, and integrating verification into startup or deployment.
Why use it?
It helps reveal unnoticed or untrusted changes to the files that control an agent's identity, permissions, tools, and behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.01244
Opus 5 $0.00037 $0.00622
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00249
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00124

Security

Grade A, and why

free2pa-protect-agent scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Protect an Agent with Free2PA

Make the files that tell an agent who it is and what it can do tamper-evident. Free2PA puts a signed receipt beside each protected file, then checks the file and the project's own trust group before the application loads it.

Workflow

1. Fact-gather before changing anything

Inspect the repository and establish how the application actually works before installing packages, generating identities, signing files, or editing startup code. Do not infer an architecture from product names alone.

Gather and report these facts with file-path evidence:

  • supported platforms, language, package manager, and actual start commands;
  • agent entry points and the code paths that read instructions or configuration;
  • local files that affect model instructions, tools, permissions, identity, memory, policy, or startup behavior;
  • existing validation, signing, secret storage, CI, and failure handling;
  • deployment topology and whether verification should be local, shared, CLI, HTTP, or MCP-based;
  • current test commands and the repository's working-tree state; and
  • any existing Free2PA files, sidecars, certificates, or trust directories.

Start the user-facing response with a short Free2PA fact sheet containing:

Agent entry point:
Candidate agent control files:
Current load boundary:
Existing security checks:
Likely integration surface:
Unknowns requiring an owner decision:

Separate observed facts from recommendations. If a required fact cannot be discovered, ask only for the missing owner decision. Typical owner decisions are who may publish, which files are in scope, and whether failure should block, repair, alert and continue, or only log. Never create trust policy by guessing.

2. Find the agent control files

Inspect the application before editing. Identify every local file that can change model instructions, tool availability, permissions, identity, memory, or startup behavior. Typical examples include:

  • SKILL.md, SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, and system-prompt files;
  • MCP and tool manifests;
  • agent, policy, workflow, and permission configuration; and
  • files read into model context during startup.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
