alpacalyzer-algo-trader: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/new-scanner/SKILL.md

new-scanner is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from kimrejstrom/alpacalyzer-algo-trader. It costs 32 tokens per session (817 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for creating a new data scanner, such as one that reads information from Twitter or Bloomberg. It defines where the scanner and its tests should go and how it should return results.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding a scanner that finds trading opportunities from external data and connects it to the project’s scanning pipeline.
Why use it?
It gives scanner work a consistent structure and helps avoid missing tests or compatibility with the existing pipeline. It also covers handling failed data requests and duplicate results.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.00817
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00409
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00163
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00082

Security

Grade A, and why

new-scanner scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 88 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Scope Constraint

  • Scanner files go in src/alpacalyzer/scanners/{name}_scanner.py
  • Tests go in tests/test_{name}_scanner.py
  • Scanners discover trading opportunities from external data sources

Placeholders

  • <scanner> — lowercase with underscores (e.g., twitter)
  • <Scanner> — PascalCase (e.g., Twitter)

Steps

1. Study the reference implementations

Read these files:

  1. src/alpacalyzer/scanners/reddit_scanner.py — Reddit API integration (PRAW)
  2. src/alpacalyzer/scanners/finviz_scanner.py — web scraping + fundamental filters
  3. src/alpacalyzer/scanners/adapters.py — scanner adapter pattern for pipeline integration

Key patterns: scanners implement the Scanner protocol (or extend BaseScanner ABC) from src/alpacalyzer/pipeline/scanner_protocol.py. They return ScanResult objects containing lists of TopTicker, handle API failures gracefully (return empty results), deduplicate results, and filter invalid symbols.

2. Create scanner file

Create src/alpacalyzer/scanners/<scanner>_scanner.py. Extend BaseScanner from src/alpacalyzer/pipeline/scanner_protocol.py:

from alpacalyzer.pipeline.scanner_protocol import BaseScanner
from alpacalyzer.data.models import TopTicker

class <Scanner>Scanner(BaseScanner):
    def __init__(self):
        super().__init__(name="<scanner>", enabled=True, cache_ttl_seconds=300)

    def _execute_scan(self) -> list[TopTicker]:
        # Fetch data, extract tickers, deduplicate, filter
        # Return [] on failure, never crash
        ...
  • API client initialization (use env vars for keys, never hardcode)
  • _execute_scan() method — fetch data, extract tickers, deduplicate, filter
  • Error handling — BaseScanner.scan() wraps _execute_scan() with timing and error handling automatically

3. Register scanner in pipeline

Create an adapter in src/alpacalyzer/pipeline/scanner_adapters.py following the existing RedditScannerAdapter or SocialScannerAdapter pattern.

Then register the adapter in src/alpacalyzer/pipeline/registry.py via ScannerRegistry. The CLI registers scanners at startup in src/alpacalyzer/cli.py.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

new-scanner is a skill published in the GitHub repository kimrejstrom/alpacalyzer-algo-trader (2 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 32 tokens to every session and 817 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
