kumiho-backfill

kumiho-backfill is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from KumihoIO/kumiho-plugins. It costs 46 tokens per session (1,263 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A history-import tool for finding useful memories in past Codex conversations, preparing them locally, and importing only reviewed items into Kumiho, a memory system for coding assistants.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps backfill memories from Codex sessions and, when explicitly scoped, from Claude history or ChatGPT exports.
Why use it?
It avoids blindly copying old chat history into memory. Local staging and review help limit the import to the requested conversations and date range.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.01263
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00632
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00253
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00126

Security

Grade A, and why

kumiho-backfill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/prepare_backfill.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Kumiho History Backfill

Turn authorized historical context into useful reviewed memories. Use the host model for distillation and the connected OAuth MCP for storage. No SDK install, separate API key or background process is required. User scope overrides defaults.

Choose accessible input

  • In a local Codex or Claude Code environment, read only user-selected session files or an explicitly authorized date/source selection. A default history location is not permission to scan it. Codex and Claude Code histories are separate opt-in sources. A Claude Code session is one top-level .jsonl file per conversation; files under a session's subagents/ folder are not.
  • In Cowork, use only files the user has shared with the session, such as a copied session file or export in a folder they selected. Do not claim access to history elsewhere on their computer.
  • In ChatGPT, use a user-provided export or excerpts that are actually accessible in the conversation. Do not claim access to all prior ChatGPT chats or the user's computer. If file processing is unavailable, accept a small selected excerpt; do not invent a terminal or request a whole archive unnecessarily.
  • The helper does not parse a claude.ai account data export. For claude.ai chats, accept small selected excerpts instead.
  • Explain that selected text is processed by the current host's model provider; only approved distilled captures are sent to the connected Kumiho workspace. Inspection/extraction does not authorize ingestion.

Prepare and distill

When file execution is available, use the bundled stdlib-only scripts/prepare_backfill.py. Resolve the path from this skill; never assume a repository or installed plugin cache path. Choose an available Python 3.11+ runtime; do not install packages or change authentication.

python <skill>/scripts/prepare_backfill.py prepare --source codex --input <selected.jsonl> --out <new-batch-directory>
python <skill>/scripts/prepare_backfill.py prepare --source chatgpt --input <conversations.json> --conversation <selected-id> --out <new-batch-directory>

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

kumiho-backfill is a skill published in the GitHub repository KumihoIO/kumiho-plugins (2 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 1,263 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-05.
