kx-handlebars

kx-handlebars is a skill for Claude Code from KxSystems/kx-skills. It costs 53 tokens per session (1,275 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide to Handlebars, a template language used in KX Dashboards to insert values into labels, tooltips, KPI text, and other content. It explains expressions, conditions, escaping, and common template locations.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when configuring Text templates, datagrid cell content, custom tooltips, tooltip templates, or other dashboard fields that need conditional or formatted values.
Why use it?
It helps produce dynamic dashboard text safely and use the correct syntax for data columns and ViewStates.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00053 $0.01275
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00638
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00255
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00128

Security

Grade A, and why

kx-handlebars scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

KX Dashboards — Handlebars Templates

Templates in KX Dashboards are Handlebars 4.7 strings stored as JSON string values. The most common locations are Template, CustomTooltip, TooltipTemplate, and advancedTooltip. This skill uses progressive disclosure: the core syntax, context rules, and common mistakes are here; the full helper catalog and the copy-ready template galleries live in reference/.

Reference Files

File Read it when you need…
reference/helpers.md The full built-in helper catalog — every String, Number, Comparison/Logic, Array, and Date/Time helper with usage and examples.
reference/templates.md Copy-ready template snippets — per-component tooltips (Datagrid, ChartGL, Heatmap, Gauge/Bullet, Radar, Chart3D, OfflineMap), Datagrid column cells, Text/KPI tiles, and Heatmap node labels.

Core Syntax

Expression Output
{{col}} HTML-escaped value of col
{{{col}}} Unescaped raw HTML — use for HTML content in cell templates
{{#if x}}…{{/if}} Conditional block
{{#if x}}…{{else}}…{{/if}} Conditional with fallback
{{#unless x}}…{{/unless}} Inverse conditional
{{#each arr}}…{{/each}} Iterate over array or object
{{@key}} Current key when iterating an object
{{@index}} Current index when iterating an array (0-based)
{{#with obj}}…{{/with}} Change context to obj
{{lookup obj key}} Dynamic property access: {{lookup row fieldName}}

⚠️ All templates are JSON strings — escape double quotes as \" inside the template string.

⚠️ Context rules — the most common source of bugs

The Handlebars this context differs by component. Using the wrong pattern is the most frequent mistake.

Component / field Context shape Access pattern
Datagrid ColumnsConfiguration[].Template Current row object {{colName}} or {{value}} for the current cell
Datagrid Tooltip.Template Current row object {{colName}} for any column
Text Basics.Template (data source) Array of row objects {{this.0.colName}}this is the array, this.0 is the first row
Text Basics.Template (ViewState only) ViewState map {{vsName}} directly
ChartGL Overlay.CustomTooltip Array of point objects {{#each this}} then {{xAxis}}, {{yAxis}}, {{name}}, {{color}}, {{icon}}, {{width}}
Gauge/Bullet Tooltip.CustomTooltip Array of data objects {{#each this}} then {{dataCol}}, {{dataVal}}, {{title}}, {{data}}
Heatmap Tooltip.TooltipTemplate Special named variables {{_name}}, {{_label}}, {{_value}}, {{_color}} — no #each needed
Heatmap Data[].NodeLabel.customLabel Current node row {{colName}}plain text only, no HTML
Radar Tooltip.advancedTooltip Object with dataSet array {{#each dataSet}} then {{color}}, {{layerKey}}, {{layerValue}}, {{legend}}
Chart3D advancedTooltip Object with points array {{#each points}} then {{xLabel}}, {{x}}, {{yLabel}}, {{y}}, {{zLabel}}, {{z}}
OfflineMap layer Tooltip GeoJSON feature properties {{propertyName}} directly
SelectionControls labelTemplate Current item row {{colName}}
BasicComponents Image Template Current data row {{colName}}
PieJS PieceLabelTemplate Current segment row {{colName}}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
