update-main

A procedure for updating a normal repository checkout on its main branch to the newest version from origin/main.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to safely fast-forward a clean main checkout while checking its repository state and reporting the result.
Why use it?
It prevents accidental updates to another branch or a linked worktree, and stops when local changes could be put at risk.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00053 $0.00358
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00179
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00072
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00036

Measured yesterday against content hash d23a49bb2cb1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

update-main scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Update Main

Update only an ordinary checkout's main branch through the repository-owned ./worktree --update-main command.

  1. Resolve and enter the checkout root with git rev-parse --show-toplevel.

  2. Read the absolute Git directory and common Git directory:

    git rev-parse --absolute-git-dir
    git rev-parse --path-format=absolute --git-common-dir

Refuse to continue when they differ. That identifies a linked worktree; direct the user to its Update to latest main environment action instead.

  3. Require git branch --show-current to equal main. Refuse detached HEADs and other branches rather than moving them.

  4. Require git status --porcelain to be empty. Report the changed paths and stop when the checkout has local changes.

  5. Record git rev-parse --short=8 HEAD, then run ./worktree --update-main from the checkout root. Do not replace it with git pull, a merge, or a rebase: the script owns fetching, ancestry checks, and the fast-forward-only update.

  6. Report whether the checkout was already current or the old and new short commit IDs. Preserve and surface any refusal from the script.

Never commit, push, stash, discard changes, or switch branches as part of this skill.

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
