color

color is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from lenxism/ives. It costs 107 tokens per session (1,097 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A practical guide to choosing and using colors in interface design. It covers palettes, contrast, accessibility, structural colors such as backgrounds and borders, interactive colors, gradients, gray tones, and dark interfaces.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when selecting interface colors, building light or dark palettes, checking text contrast, styling controls, choosing grays and near-whites, or deciding how much color to use.
Why use it?
It helps prevent color choices that make text hard to read or make interactive controls unclear. It also provides checks for common accessibility contrast requirements.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00107 $0.01097
Opus 5 $0.00053 $0.00549
Sonnet 5 $0.00021 $0.00219
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00110

Security

Grade A, and why

color scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Color

Color is powerful but dangerous. A few wrong grays can undermine an entire interface. Master the principles, and color becomes your strongest tool.

Read references/color-knowledge.md for detailed gray analysis and dark UI techniques.

Color Selection Methods

Start with one of these approaches:

  • HSB method — Pick a hue, then adjust saturation and brightness for variants. Most intuitive for creating cohesive palettes.
  • Brand-first — Start with the brand's primary color, derive everything else from it.
  • Reference-first — Find an interface you admire, extract its palette, then adapt.

Contrast and Accessibility

Non-negotiable minimums:

  • Body text (16px regular): 4.5:1 contrast ratio (WCAG AA)
  • Large text (18px regular, 14px bold): 3:1 contrast ratio (WCAG AA Large)
  • Interactive elements: Must be distinguishable without color alone (add icons, weight, underlines)

Placeholder text is a gray area: AA-large (3:1) is often the right balance — dark enough to read, light enough to not look pre-filled.

Structural vs Interactive Color

Structural colors define the interface skeleton: backgrounds, containers, borders, dividers. Keep these neutral.

Interactive colors signal action: buttons, links, selected states, focus rings. Keep these vibrant and consistent.

Never let structural colors compete with interactive colors. If your background is colorful, your buttons lose their signal.

The Gray System

The most critical color skill. Most interfaces need 3-5 carefully chosen grays:

  1. Dark text — Primary content (e.g., #333 or a dark with slight hue)
  2. Medium gray — Secondary text, icons, metadata
  3. Light gray — Dividers, borders
  4. Lighter gray — Backgrounds, hover states
  5. Near-white — Subtle background differentiation

Critical rule: keep grays in the same hue family

Twitter's grays all sit around hue 208-210 (cool blue). Pinterest uses warm, desaturated grays that complement their red brand. Gmail uses a scattered mix of warm and cool grays — and it shows.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

color is a skill published in the GitHub repository lenxism/ives (5 stars, last pushed 6mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 107 tokens to every session and 1,097 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
