In plain words
What is it for?
Finding notes, reading their contents, creating new notes, and updating existing notes in Obsidian.
Why use it?
It lets the agent work with your notes through defined tools instead of manually searching and changing files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00030 $0.02768
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.01384
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00554
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00277

Security

Grade A, and why

openclaw-skill scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/obsidian-mcp.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Obsidian MCP Skill

You have access to the user's Obsidian vault via the Obsidian MCP Server plugin. Use the helper script to read, search, create, and edit notes.

Setup

Environment variables:

Variable Required Default Description
OBSIDIAN_MCP_TOKEN No Bearer token from Obsidian Settings > Obsidian MCP Server. Only needed if authentication is enabled.
OBSIDIAN_MCP_PORT No 27123 Server port
OBSIDIAN_MCP_HOST No 127.0.0.1 Server host

The helper script is at: ./scripts/obsidian-mcp.sh

How to Use

Initialize a session

./scripts/obsidian-mcp.sh init

Call a tool

# No arguments
./scripts/obsidian-mcp.sh call describe_vault

# With arguments (pass a JSON object)
./scripts/obsidian-mcp.sh call read_note '{"path": "Notes/Meeting.md"}'

The script auto-initializes a session if none exists and re-initializes on session expiry. You generally don't need to call init manually.

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

openclaw-skill is a skill published in the GitHub repository Leonezz/obsidian-mcp-server (3 stars, last pushed 6mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 30 tokens to every session and 2,768 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
