acf-value-storage-frontend

acf-value-storage-frontend is a skill for Codex from Lonsdale201/wp-agent-skills. It costs 107 tokens per session (2,092 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to how Advanced Custom Fields stores, updates, reads, and displays values in WordPress. It explains the visible value and the hidden field-key reference used to identify how that value should be handled.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to write or inspect fields on posts, users, terms, comments, or site options, diagnose missing values, and render frontend data safely.
Why use it?
It prevents database values from looking correct while ACF cannot format or load them, and helps avoid unsafe output and incorrect storage targets.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00107 $0.02092
Opus 5.5 $0.00043 $0.00837
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00418
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00209

Measured 28d ago against content hash d4c30d5a45df, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

acf-value-storage-frontend scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 197 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

ACF value storage and frontend rendering

ACF normally stores a field as a pair:

acme_event_start   = 2026-10-20 18:00:00
_acme_event_start  = field_acme_event_start

The visible row contains the raw value. The underscore-prefixed row maps the field name to its stable field key, which lets ACF find the field type and apply the correct load/format behavior. A raw meta value without a valid reference can look present in SQL while get_field() returns an unformatted value, no value, or a value governed by a different field definition.

Storage locations

ACF $post_id WordPress storage Example value/reference keys
123 wp_postmeta field_name, _field_name
user_12 wp_usermeta field_name, _field_name
term_34 or category_34 wp_termmeta field_name, _field_name
comment_56 wp_commentmeta field_name, _field_name
option or options wp_options options_field_name, _options_field_name
custom option target such as option_brand_a wp_options option_brand_a_field_name, _option_brand_a_field_name

Numeric IDs mean posts. Pass the explicit prefixed target for every other object; do not rely on the current global object in imports, cron, REST, or CLI code.

Read with the shape you intend to render

$post_id = get_the_ID();

// Plain text: format through ACF, then escape for this HTML context.
$eyebrow = get_field( 'acme_eyebrow', $post_id );
if ( is_string( $eyebrow ) && '' !== $eyebrow ) {
    echo '<p class="eyebrow">' . esc_html( $eyebrow ) . '</p>';
}

// WYSIWYG: ask ACF 6.2.6+ for its field-aware safe HTML value.
$body = get_field( 'acme_body', $post_id, true, true );
if ( is_string( $body ) && '' !== $body ) {
    echo $body; // ACF returned the escaped/formatted value.
}

// Image configured to return an attachment ID.
$image_id = (int) get_field( 'acme_image', $post_id );
if ( $image_id ) {
    echo wp_get_attachment_image( $image_id, 'large' );
}

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
