Overview
Use javadoc-cli to read published JavaDoc from Maven artifacts without relying on memory. Prefer this skill when the question is about an external dependency API and the answer depends on exact signatures, overloads, deprecations, return values, thrown exceptions, or package/class discovery.
If javadoc-cli is not already on PATH, invoke it through npm with npx -y -p javadoc-mcp javadoc-cli ....
Workflow
- Identify
groupId,artifactId, andversionbefore running commands. If the user omits the version, ask for it or clearly state the version you assume. - Start broad with
javadoc-cli searchwhen the user only knows a keyword, class fragment, or member name. - Use

Use first when the target is fuzzy.
- Good for: “find retry-related packages”, “where is
StringUtils”, “which member is namedtimeout”, “findorg.foo.Bar.baz”. categoryis optional; omit it to search types, members, and packages together.- Search matches indexed names, not JavaDoc prose. It does not search description text.
- Use
category="type"to narrow to indexed types such as classes, interfaces, enums, annotations, exceptions, and records. - Type results include the fully qualified class name, and type queries can match either the simple name or the fully qualified class name.
- Use
category="member"when the user asks about a method name but not the declaring type. - Member results include the declaring class, and member queries can match a simple member name or a fully qualified reference such as
