ebook-writer: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/reference-analyzer/SKILL.md

reference-analyzer is a skill for Claude Code from lowtidebuild/ebook-writer. It costs 0 tokens per session (432 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A tool for reading reference files such as Markdown, PDF, text, and Word documents, then extracting their important content.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to identify key concepts, methods, and findings and return them in a structured form, with large documents split into smaller output files.
Why use it?
It avoids manually reading and copying entire reference documents into an agent's context.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00432
Opus 5.5 $0.00000 $0.00173
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00000 $0.00086
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00043

Measured 2mo ago against content hash 6917a6d97870, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

reference-analyzer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/parse_references.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Reference Analyzer Skill

Purpose

Parse and extract key content from reference materials in various formats (.md, .pdf, .txt, .docx).

Capabilities

  1. File type detection and appropriate parsing
  2. Key content extraction (concepts, methodologies, insights)
  3. Structured output for integration with research report
  4. Bounded chunk-file output to avoid injecting full references into agent context

Scripts

  • scripts/parse_references.py — Parse reference files and extract text content

Usage

.venv/bin/python3 .claude/skills/reference-analyzer/scripts/parse_references.py <file_path>
.venv/bin/python3 .claude/skills/reference-analyzer/scripts/parse_references.py <file_path> \
  --output-dir output/research/reference_chunks/<source_name>/

Output: JSON to stdout

{
  "filename": "reference.pdf",
  "content_type": "pdf",
  "extracted_text": "...",
  "word_count": 1500,
  "status": "success"
}

Prefer --output-dir in the ebook pipeline. In that mode stdout contains only status, word count, chunk count, and manifest path; extracted text is written to bounded chunk JSON files under output/research/reference_chunks/.

Chunked stdout example:

{
  "filename": "reference.pdf",
  "content_type": "pdf",
  "word_count": 1500,
  "chunk_count": 3,
  "manifest_path": "output/research/reference_chunks/reference_pdf/manifest.json",
  "status": "success"
}

When to Use

  • Researcher Agent processes files in input/references/
  • When a domain plugin specifies reference materials

Failure Handling

  • PDF parsing failure → attempt textutil conversion (macOS)
  • DOCX parsing failure → attempt raw XML extraction
  • If all parsing methods fail → return status "failed" with error message
  • Never block the pipeline on a single reference file failure
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

reference-analyzer is a skill published in the GitHub repository lowtidebuild/ebook-writer (6 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 432 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
