n8n-workflow-patterns

n8n-workflow-patterns is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from lucas-denzer/n8n-mcp. It costs 117 tokens per session (3,754 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of n8n-workflow-patterns, MIT.

A guide to common design patterns for n8n, a tool for building automated workflows. It covers webhook handling, API connections, database tasks, AI agents, scheduled jobs, and batch processing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when planning or building n8n workflows that receive web requests, call APIs, read or write databases, run AI agents, process batches, or run on a schedule.
Why use it?
It helps you choose a sensible workflow structure instead of designing each automation from scratch. It also shows where validation, error handling, and data checks fit.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00117 $0.03754
Opus 5 $0.00059 $0.01877
Sonnet 5 $0.00023 $0.00751
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00375

Security

Grade A, and why

n8n-workflow-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

n8n Workflow Patterns

Proven architectural patterns for building n8n workflows.

The 6 Core Patterns

Based on analysis of real workflow usage:

  1. Webhook Processing (Most Common)

    • Receive HTTP requests → Process → Output
    • Pattern: Webhook → Validate → Transform → Respond/Notify
  2. HTTP API Integration

    • Fetch from REST APIs → Transform → Store/Use
    • Pattern: Trigger → HTTP Request → Transform → Action → Error Handler
  3. Database Operations

    • Read/Write/Sync database data
    • Pattern: Schedule → Query → Transform → Write → Verify
  4. AI Agent Workflow

    • AI agents with tools and memory
    • Pattern: Trigger → AI Agent (Model + Tools + Memory) → Output
  5. Scheduled Tasks

    • Recurring automation workflows
    • Pattern: Schedule → Fetch → Process → Deliver → Log
  6. Batch Processing (below)

    • Process large datasets in chunks with API rate limits
    • Pattern: Prepare → SplitInBatches → Process per batch → Accumulate → Aggregate

Pattern Selection Guide

When to use each pattern:

Webhook Processing - Use when:

  • Receiving data from external systems
  • Building integrations (Slack commands, form submissions, GitHub webhooks)
  • Need instant response to events
  • Example: "Receive Stripe payment webhook → Update database → Send confirmation"

HTTP API Integration - Use when:

  • Fetching data from external APIs
  • Synchronizing with third-party services
  • Building data pipelines
  • Example: "Fetch GitHub issues → Transform → Create Jira tickets"

Database Operations - Use when:

  • Syncing between databases
  • Running database queries on schedule
  • ETL workflows
  • Example: "Read Postgres records → Transform → Write to MySQL"

AI Agent Workflow - Use when:

  • Building conversational AI
  • Need AI with tool access
  • Multi-step reasoning tasks
  • Example: "Chat with AI that can search docs, query database, send emails"

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
