epub-to-obsidian-notes

epub-to-obsidian-notes is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from luna-jmy/thinkdokit-skills. It costs 95 tokens per session (951 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A book-import tool that turns EPUB ebooks into Markdown notes arranged for an Obsidian vault. It creates a folder for each book, with folders and notes following the book’s table of contents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Import one or many EPUB books into Obsidian, organise chapters into folders, extract images, and repair common import problems.
Why use it?
It avoids the messy structure and missing details that can result from a basic EPUB importer. Images, book metadata, and footnotes remain available in the converted notes.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00095 $0.00951
Opus 5 $0.00048 $0.00476
Sonnet 5 $0.00019 $0.00190
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00095

Measured 12d ago against content hash 3e8107af3093, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-12, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

epub-to-obsidian-notes scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/convert_epub_to_obsidian.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 115 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

EPUB To Obsidian Notes

Use this skill when the user wants higher-quality EPUB import than a typical Obsidian plugin provides.

The bundled script is the default path:

python3 scripts/convert_epub_to_obsidian.py "/absolute/path/to/book.epub" \
  --output-root "Books"

For batch conversion, pass multiple files, directories, or glob patterns:

python3 scripts/convert_epub_to_obsidian.py \
  "/path/to/books/*.epub" \
  "/path/to/some-book.epub" \
  --output-root "Books"

What it should produce

  • One book folder per book.
  • Nested folders based on the EPUB TOC/MOC hierarchy.
  • A root moc.md for the book (with Obsidian frontmatter metadata).
  • One Markdown note per TOC node (no frontmatter).
  • Extracted cover and image assets under the book folder.
  • Footnotes that work inside the same Markdown file where the references appear.

Metadata (moc.md only)

Only moc.md gets frontmatter. Chapter notes do not have frontmatter.

---
title:
author:
type: book-moc
tags:
  - moc
  - book
cover: cover.jpg
---
  • title: Book title from EPUB metadata
  • author: Author(s) from EPUB metadata
  • type: Always book-moc
  • tags: Always [moc, book]
  • cover: Relative path to the cover image (usually cover.jpg)

Default output shape

For a book:

01_Books/
  书名/
    moc.md
    cover.jpg
    images/
    第一部分/
      第一部分.md
      第1章 xxx.md

Workflow

  1. Parse EPUB metadata, manifest, spine, and NCX/nav TOC.
  2. Use TOC anchors as the source of truth for chapter boundaries.
  3. Convert XHTML to Markdown only after injecting deterministic split markers.
  4. Extract images to the book images/ folder and rewrite references to stable relative Markdown image links.
  5. Pair footnote references and definitions before Markdown conversion so Obsidian footnotes stay valid.
  6. Write moc.md, note files, and assets.

Quality rules

  • Prefer stable chapter boundaries over aggressive splitting.
  • Never silently merge two sibling sections into one note if a TOC anchor exists.
  • If a TOC anchor cannot be found, fall back conservatively and report it.
  • Keep footnote definitions in the same output note as their references.
  • Preserve figure captions as normal text below images.
  • Use Obsidian wikilinks for note navigation in moc.md.
  • Use relative Markdown image links for nested notes because they are more reliable across folder depths than attachment-style links.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
