notebooklm

notebooklm is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from m4yk3ldev/notebooklm-mcp. It costs 121 tokens per session (1,805 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A connector for Google NotebookLM, a research notebook service that answers questions from supplied sources. It can manage notebooks, add sources, ask questions with citations, research the web or Google Drive, and create media or document summaries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to collect URLs, text, files, or Drive documents; ask questions grounded in them; and create audio overviews, videos, slide decks, reports, or infographics.
Why use it?
It keeps source material and source-based questions in one place instead of requiring manual copying between tools. Citations help show where answers came from.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00121 $0.01805
Opus 5.5 $0.00048 $0.00722
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00361
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00180

Security

Grade A, and why

notebooklm scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 99 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

NotebookLM via MCP

This skill uses the @m4ykeldev/notebooklm-mcp server, which exposes NotebookLM as 27 MCP tools. NotebookLM has no public API; the server talks to the same internal RPC endpoint the web app uses, authenticated with the user's own Google session cookies.

Setup

Check first: if tools such as notebook_list are already available, skip this section.

  1. Authenticate once (opens Chrome, waits for the Google login, stores cookies in ~/.notebooklm-mcp/auth.json):

    npx -y @m4ykeldev/notebooklm-mcp auth

    Headless / CI: set NOTEBOOKLM_COOKIES instead. Fallbacks: auth --manual (paste cookies) or auth --file tokens.json.

  2. Register the server with the client.

    Claude Code:

    claude mcp add --transport stdio notebooklm -- npx -y @m4ykeldev/notebooklm-mcp serve

    Any JSON-configured client (Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop, ...):

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "notebooklm": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "@m4ykeldev/notebooklm-mcp", "serve"]
        }
      }
    }

    Long answers on big notebooks: append "--query-timeout", "180000" to args.

The authentication step needs the user at a browser. Ask them to run it; do not try to log in on their behalf.

Core workflow

  1. Find or create the notebook. notebook_list returns IDs, titles and source counts. Match by title before creating a duplicate. notebook_create returns the new ID.
  2. Add sources.
    • notebook_add_url — web pages and YouTube links.
    • notebook_add_text — pass content inline, or file_path for a local file. file_path must sit under the server's working directory or the OS temp dir; for anything else, read the file and pass content.
    • notebook_add_drive — needs the Drive file_id, a title and the MIME doc_type (e.g. application/vnd.google-apps.document).
    • Sources take a moment to process. Check with notebook_get before querying a source you just added.
  3. Ask questions. notebook_query answers only from the notebook's sources, using all of them by default. Restrict with source_ids when the user cares about specific documents. For follow-ups, pass back the returned conversation_id so NotebookLM keeps context.
  4. Produce output with the Studio tools (below), or summarise with notebook_describe.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

notebooklm is a skill published in the GitHub repository m4yk3ldev/notebooklm-mcp (20 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 121 tokens to every session and 1,805 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-19.
