rollback-runbook

rollback-runbook is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from makifbaysal/tasktrooper. It costs 46 tokens per session (1,352 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A rollback runbook is a set of instructions for undoing a software release and restoring the running service. It explains how different delivery methods behave and when a database schema change makes a code rollback unsafe.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before and after a release rollback to choose the correct redeploy method, check schema compatibility, follow the rollback, and report manual actions or refusals.
Why use it?
Reverting code does not automatically undo database changes, and desktop or mobile builds may already be published. The runbook prevents an incomplete rollback and explains how to handle steps that require a person.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.01352
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00541
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00270
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00135

Security

Grade A, and why

rollback-runbook scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Rollback runbook

rollback_release always reverts the release's task merge commits on the default branch and pushes that revert — production can never ship the bad change again, whatever else happens. What restores the RUNNING service depends on the component's delivery mode:

  • dispatch — the previous good release's commit is tagged and the deploy workflow is dispatched at it (Mechanism: workflow_dispatch). No previous release: it dispatches at the revert commit instead.
  • on_merge — the revert push itself is the redeploy (Mechanism: revert_push); there is nothing else to trigger.
  • batch (desktop, mobile) — nothing is redeployed. Status goes straight to rolled_back: a published desktop build or a store build cannot be unpublished by reverting a git commit, so there is no redeploy for watch_release to follow. See batch-artifact-verification for the yank step.

For dispatch/on_merge, Status becomes rolling_back and you are expected to call watch_release again to follow the redeploy through to rolled_back.

Before you roll back: check what schema the release changed

A code revert is not automatically safe. For each task in release.tasks, get_task_pull_request({ task_id, include_diff: false }) to list files, then look for migration paths: migrations/, db/migrate/, prisma/migrations/, alembic/versions/, V*__*.sql, *.up.sql. Read the up file (get_task_pull_request with the diff, or read_file) for any match.

  • Additive — CREATE TABLE/CREATE INDEX, ADD COLUMN that is nullable or has a constant default: reverting the code is safe. The previous version simply ignores the new objects — leave the schema in place; do not drop what the forward migration added.
  • Destructive or renaming — DROP COLUMN/DROP TABLE, RENAME COLUMN/RENAME TABLE, ALTER COLUMN TYPE, SET NOT NULL on an existing column: the previous version may not run against this schema at all. If the task's rollback_plan covers it, follow the plan exactly. Otherwise do not call rollback_release — comment the evidence plus "a code rollback would run the previous version against a schema it does not know — needs a human: forward fix or a down-migration first", and stop.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

rollback-runbook is a skill published in the GitHub repository makifbaysal/tasktrooper (113 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 1,352 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-05.
