supply-chain-and-dependency-review

supply-chain-and-dependency-review is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from makifbaysal/tasktrooper. It costs 59 tokens per session (1,871 once invoked), scanned C, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for reviewing changes to third-party code that a project depends on, such as packages, container images, CI actions, Terraform modules, or vendored code. It checks the dependency's identity, known advisories, source, and ability to run code during installation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when dependencies are added, upgraded, replaced, re-pinned, downloaded by scripts, or changed in lockfiles and deployment configuration.
Why use it?
It addresses the risk of accepting code that is not fully visible in the change, including a renamed, hijacked, compromised, or unexpectedly sourced dependency.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00059 $0.01871
Opus 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00748
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00374
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00187

Security

Grade C, and why

supply-chain-and-dependency-review scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

curl | sh runs whatever the server returns today, which is not necessarily what it returned when this was reviewed.

Also: `curl … | sh` and `wget … | bash` in scripts and Dockerfiles, new `uses:` lines, `FROM` lines, `replace` directives, git URLs in manifests, vendored directories.

Supply Chain and Dependency Review

Overview

A dependency is code you run without reviewing it. A diff that adds or changes one asks the reviewer to vouch for code that is not in the diff. You cannot read it all; you can check whether it is known-bad, misspelled, newly hijacked, or able to run code at install time. OWASP Top 10:2025 lists this as A03 Software Supply Chain Failures.

Core principle: judge the dependency change by evidence — advisories, identity, provenance. Unavailable data is never evidence of risk, and an absent measurement is never a clean verdict.

1. Find Every Dependency Change

git diff --name-only "$base" | grep -E 'package(-lock)?\.json|pnpm-lock|yarn\.lock|bun\.lock|go\.(mod|sum)|pom\.xml|\.gradle(\.kts)?|libs\.versions\.toml|requirements.*\.txt|pyproject\.toml|poetry\.lock|uv\.lock|Pipfile|Cargo\.(toml|lock)|Gemfile|Podfile|Package\.resolved|pubspec|\.csproj|packages\.lock\.json|Dockerfile|\.github/workflows|\.terraform\.lock\.hcl|\.gitmodules'
git diff "$base" -- package-lock.json | grep -E '^\+\s+"(node_modules/[^"]+|version|resolved|integrity|hasInstallScript)"'

Also: curl … | sh and wget … | bash in scripts and Dockerfiles, new uses: lines, FROM lines, replace directives, git URLs in manifests, vendored directories.

2. Advisories — Version-Matched

Query OSV for each new or changed name@version. fetch_url is GET-only, so the query goes through run_terminal (a network read, not project code):

curl -s https://api.osv.dev/v1/query \
  -d '{"package":{"name":"lodash","ecosystem":"npm"},"version":"4.17.20"}'

Ecosystem names: npm, PyPI, Go, Maven, crates.io, RubyGems, NuGet, Packagist, Pub. Details of one advisory: fetch_url https://api.osv.dev/v1/vulns/<id>. A cross-check with publish dates and advisory keys: fetch_url https://api.deps.dev/v3/systems/npm/packages/<url-encoded name>/versions/<version>.

Then judge it:

  • MAL-… id (OpenSSF malicious packages) → the package is malware: block.
  • Critical/high advisory with a fixed version available, on a dependency this diff added or changed → block, naming the fixed version.
  • Critical/high with no fix yet, or an advisory whose vulnerable function or config is clearly not used → a non-blocking note.
  • A pre-existing vulnerable dependency the diff did not touch → not this review.
  • For Go, govulncheck (if installed — read-only-security-scanners) reports whether the vulnerable symbol is actually reachable.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

supply-chain-and-dependency-review is a skill published in the GitHub repository makifbaysal/tasktrooper (113 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 59 tokens to every session and 1,871 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it C with 2 findings (downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-09.
