test-doubles-wiremock

test-doubles-wiremock is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from makifbaysal/tasktrooper. It costs 38 tokens per session (805 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A testing procedure that replaces an external HTTP service with a controllable fake, such as WireMock, while running the product code for real. The fake can return chosen success and failure responses.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when a test depends on a service the team does not own or that has side effects. It helps test responses, errors, and received requests without contacting the real service.
Why use it?
Calling a real payment, authentication, email, or partner service makes tests slow, flaky, costly, and unable to reliably exercise failures. A stub keeps the test focused on the product's behaviour.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.00805
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00322
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00161
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00081

Security

Grade A, and why

test-doubles-wiremock scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Test Doubles & WireMock

Overview

An automated test that calls a real third-party service (payment gateway, auth provider, partner API) is slow, flaky, costs money, and cannot exercise failure modes on demand. Replace those dependencies with a controllable stub — WireMock for HTTP — so the test owns every response.

Core principle: The system under test is real; its external dependencies are stubbed. You test YOUR code's behavior against controlled inputs, not the third party's uptime.

When to Use / When NOT

  • Stub: third-party/external HTTP services, payment/email/SMS providers, partner APIs, anything you don't own or that has side effects/cost.
  • Do NOT stub: the product's own API or the code under test — driving those for real is the whole point. And do not stub the database; use a real test database instead (see test-database-seeding) so SQL/dialect behavior is genuine.

WireMock Essentials

Run WireMock as a standalone server or a Testcontainers container; point the app's config for that dependency at its URL.

// stub: the auth provider returns a valid token for a known client
{
  "request":  { "method": "POST", "url": "/oauth/token" },
  "response": { "status": 200, "jsonBody": { "access_token": "test-token", "expires_in": 3600 } }
}

Model the failure paths too — that's the value a real service won't give you on demand:

Scenario to cover WireMock stub
Happy response 200 + expected body
Upstream 5xx "status": 503 → assert your retry/fallback
Timeout "fixedDelayMilliseconds": 30000 → assert your timeout handling
Malformed body 200 + garbage → assert you don't crash
Auth rejected 401 → assert your error surfaces cleanly

Rules

  • Verify the request too, not just the canned response: assert the app called the dependency with the right method/path/body (WireMock verify). A stub that always returns 200 hides a broken request.
  • Reset stubs between tests so one test's mappings don't leak into another.
  • Match the contract exactly — stub the real endpoint's shape. A stub that diverges from reality passes tests but ships integration bugs; keep it aligned with the provider's documented contract.
  • Prefer per-test stubs over one giant global mapping file — tests stay readable and independent.

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

test-doubles-wiremock is a skill published in the GitHub repository makifbaysal/tasktrooper (113 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 805 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-05.
