process-api-net11

process-api-net11 is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from managedcode/dotnet-skills. It costs 109 tokens per session (2,488 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of process-api-net11, MIT.

A guide to the new process-running APIs in .NET 11, Microsoft's framework for building .NET applications. It covers starting programs, capturing their output, controlling child-process lifetime, and managing inherited handles.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to start external programs, capture their standard output and errors, stop child programs when the parent exits, control inherited handles, or start detached processes in .NET 11 and later.
Why use it?
It reduces boilerplate and avoids common deadlocks when an application reads output from another program. These APIs are not available to projects targeting .NET 10 or earlier.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00109 $0.02488
Opus 5.5 $0.00044 $0.00995
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00498
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00249

Security

Grade A, and why

process-api-net11 scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Process API Improvements — .NET 11

New APIs added to System.Diagnostics.Process in .NET 11 simplify process management, eliminate boilerplate, and prevent common deadlock patterns when capturing output in .NET 11 or later applications.

When to Use

  • Running or orchestrating external processes in a .NET 11 (or later) project.
  • Needing to start a process, wait for it to exit, and capture its output/error streams without risking deadlocks (Process.RunAndCaptureText[Async]).
  • Wanting to ensure child processes are automatically terminated when the parent process exits (KillOnParentExit).
  • Requiring lightweight, low-overhead process creation via SafeProcessHandle on supported platforms.
  • Requiring fine-grained control over handle inheritance (InheritedHandles) or starting detached processes (StartDetached).

When Not to Use

  • The project targets .NET 10 or earlier — these APIs are not available before .NET 11.
  • The default Process.Start() is sufficient and does not require output capturing or advanced lifecycle rules.

New APIs

Types

Before using the new convenience methods, note the following types. Use the framework types directly:

Type Kind Read-only properties
ProcessExitStatus Sealed class int ExitCode, bool Canceled, PosixSignal? Signal
ProcessTextOutput Sealed class ProcessExitStatus ExitStatus, string StandardOutput, string StandardError, int ProcessId
ProcessOutputLine Readonly struct string Content, bool StandardError

ProcessExitStatus describes the outcome of a completed process. Interpret ExitCode using the external command's contract; there is no universal Success property. ProcessTextOutput contains the exit status, captured output and error text, and process ID. ProcessOutputLine identifies one output line and whether it came from standard error.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
