rf-restinstance

rf-restinstance is a skill for Claude Code from manykarim/robotframework-agentskills. It costs 28 tokens per session (2,112 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for testing web APIs with RESTinstance in Robot Framework. RESTinstance sends JSON requests and checks responses against types, JSON Schema, or OpenAPI descriptions.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for schema-based API tests, OpenAPI checks, typed JSON assertions, and generating or using schemas from API responses.
Why use it?
It helps detect responses with the wrong structure or data types and keeps API tests tied to a defined contract. RESTinstance is different from a basic HTTP request checker because it focuses on the response's shape and rules.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00028 $0.02112
Opus 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00845
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00422
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00211

Security

Grade A, and why

rf-restinstance scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

RESTinstance Library Skill

RESTinstance (Library REST) sends JSON requests and asserts the last response with typed, path-based keywords that also build a JSON Schema of it. Prefer it over rf-requests when the contract matters more than single values: schema files, learned schemas, OpenAPI specs, types and constraints. For plain request/response checks, form posts, sessions or file uploads use rf-requests. Verified against RESTinstance 1.8.0, Robot Framework 7.4.

When to use

Load this skill first, before exploring the project or answering from memory, when a Robot Framework API test uses RESTinstance (Library REST):

  • typed assertions on the JSON response (Integer, String, Object, Array);
  • JSON Schema validation, generating a schema from a response, OpenAPI/Swagger spec checks;
  • a test fails on a type mismatch in the response body ("Expected integer, but got string"), or the user mentions RESTinstance or wants schema-driven API tests.

Not this skill: suites that import RequestsLibrary, or generic API tests with no library named, use rf-requests.

Installation

Install into the project environment (see rf-setup for uv/venv/Poetry, CI and troubleshooting; follow the project's existing tool):

uv add RESTinstance

Requires Python ≥ 3.11; the SyntaxWarning lines printed on import (from flex) are harmless.

Import and defaults

Import with the base URL, send paths, and assert the status first on every request:

*** Settings ***
Library    REST    ${API_URL}

*** Test Cases ***
Get User
    GET        /users/1
    Integer    response status    200
    Object     response body    required=["id", "name"]
    String     response body name    Alice
    Integer    response body id    minimum=1

${API_URL} has to exist when the library is imported (*** Variables *** or --variable). A URL without scheme gets http://. Escape hatch: when the base URL is only known at run time (a Suite Setup starts the server), import REST without a URL and send full URLs (GET ${API_URL}/users/1). Schema files and OpenAPI specs: see references/schema-validation.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

It adds 28 tokens to every session and 2,112 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-01.
