12-principles-of-animation

12-principles-of-animation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from marchatton/agent-skills. It costs 60 tokens per session (1,038 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to Disney’s 12 animation principles, adapted for motion in web interfaces such as transitions, feedback, and moving components.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or reviewing CSS animations, transitions, motion-library effects, springs, or small interaction details in a web interface.
Why use it?
It helps animations feel understandable and natural instead of distracting or abrupt. It gives names and practical direction for choosing timing, easing, movement, and emphasis.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00060 $0.01038
Opus 5 $0.00030 $0.00519
Sonnet 5 $0.00012 $0.00208
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00104

Security

Grade A, and why

12-principles-of-animation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

12 Principles of Animation

Source: ui-skills.com.

Disney animators codified these principles in the 1930s to make drawings feel real. We use them to make pixels feel human. The problems are surprisingly similar.

When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:

  • Adding motion to UI components
  • Reviewing animation quality and feel
  • Designing micro-interactions and feedback
  • Making interfaces feel more alive and responsive
  • Deciding what should (and shouldn't) animate

Principles Overview

# Principle Web Application
1 Squash and Stretch Convey weight and elasticity in morphing elements
2 Anticipation Prepare users for what comes next (wind-up before action)
3 Staging Direct attention through sequential animation
4 Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose Define keyframes, let browser interpolate
5 Follow Through & Overlapping Use springs for organic overshoot-and-settle
6 Slow In & Slow Out Apply easing curves for natural acceleration
7 Arcs Add curved paths for organic movement
8 Secondary Action Reinforce primary actions with subtle flourishes
9 Timing Keep interactions under 300ms, be consistent
10 Exaggeration Amplify motion for emphasis (sparingly)
11 Solid Drawing Use perspective, shadows, and depth
12 Appeal The sum of all techniques applied with care

Quick Reference

1. Squash and Stretch

Digital objects don't have physics, so we fake it. Subtle deformation conveys weight—but don't overdo it or professional software becomes a cartoon.

2. Anticipation

Give cues before major actions. Pull-to-refresh hints, buttons that compress before sending. Reserve for moments that matter—too many wind-ups make apps feel sluggish.

3. Staging

Guide the eye through sequential animation. Dim backgrounds, focus on important elements. Direct attention like a film.

4. Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose

Focus on key poses: start state, end state, maybe a midpoint. Context menus animate on exit only—entrance animation compounds into irritation.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
