design-first-collaboration

design-first-collaboration is a skill for Claude Code from marinahaugen/polymorph-mindset-plugins. It costs 42 tokens per session (1,270 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structured design process for turning feature requirements into an agreed technical plan before code is written. It breaks the work into capabilities, components, interactions, and contracts, then records the decisions.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps decompose a feature, define how parts communicate, agree on interfaces and data contracts, create an architecture decision record, and prepare an implementation plan.
Why use it?
Starting implementation before agreeing on the system's shape can lead to rework and conflicting assumptions. Approval checkpoints make the important design choices visible before development begins.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.01270
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.00635
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00254
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00127

Security

Grade A, and why

design-first-collaboration scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Architectural Design First

Structured architectural decomposition in four levels, each requiring user approval before proceeding. No code until contracts are agreed. After approval, decisions are captured as an ADR.

Position in workflow: After brainstorming (what to build) → this skill → writing-plans (implementation steps)

Process Flow

digraph design_flow {
    rankdir=TB;
    node [shape=box];
    cap [label="Level 1: Capabilities"];
    comp [label="Level 2: Components"];
    int [label="Level 3: Interactions"];
    con [label="Level 4: Contracts"];
    adr [label="Generate ADR" shape=doublecircle];
    plan [label="Transition to writing-plans" shape=doublecircle];

    cap -> comp [label="approved"];
    comp -> int [label="approved"];
    int -> con [label="approved"];
    con -> adr [label="approved"];
    adr -> plan;

    cap -> cap [label="revise"];
    comp -> comp [label="revise"];
    int -> int [label="revise"];
    con -> con [label="revise"];
}

The Four Levels

Level 1: Capabilities

Question: What does this feature need to DO?

List concrete capabilities from the user's perspective. No technical decisions — just what the system must be able to do. Bulleted list, each starting with a verb.

Ask: "Are these the right capabilities? Anything missing or unnecessary?"

Level 2: Components

Question: What pieces do we need to build?

Identify components — services, storage, endpoints — and where they live in the existing architecture. Reference real files and patterns from the codebase. Table or structured list with responsibilities and locations.

Include: Which modules/layers, new vs modified components, storage decisions Exclude: Method signatures (→ Contracts), data flow (→ Interactions)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

design-first-collaboration is a skill published in the GitHub repository marinahaugen/polymorph-mindset-plugins (4 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 1,270 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
