docx-xml-surgeon

docx-xml-surgeon is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from MarwanDevSpace/mcp-arabic-ms-word. It costs 43 tokens per session (413 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool guide for opening a DOCX file—a Microsoft Word document—and making precise changes to its internal XML files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect or surgically modify Word document content, formatting definitions, lists, settings, headers, and footers, then verify the updated file.
Why use it?
It helps when ordinary document editing cannot safely target details such as styles, numbering, right-to-left settings, headers, or specific text structures.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.00413
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00206
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00041

Measured 7d ago against content hash e70d9306ad39, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-11, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

docx-xml-surgeon scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

WordprocessingML XML Decompression & Surgery Skill

This skill provides advanced guidance for decompressing .docx zip archives in memory, diagnosing low-level OpenXML structures, and applying surgical regex/node replacements.

1. Inner XML Structure Map

  • word/document.xml: Main body content, paragraphs (w:p), runs (w:r), text (w:t), tables (w:tbl), and section properties (w:sectPr).
  • word/styles.xml: Style hierarchies (Normal, Heading 1..6), default font families (w:rFonts), and paragraph spacing rules.
  • word/numbering.xml: List formatting and multi-level outline numbering.
  • word/settings.xml: Document-level RTL properties (w:bidi), track changes, and compatibility options.
  • word/header1.xml / word/footer1.xml: Header and footer section XML structures containing dynamic page number fields (w:fldSimple w:instr="PAGE").

2. Tool Execution Workflow

{
  "tool": "decompress_and_modify_word_xml",
  "arguments": {
    "filePath": "path/to/document.docx",
    "targetXmlPath": "word/document.xml",
    "searchPattern": "<w:jc w:val=\"left\"/>",
    "replacementValue": "<w:jc w:val=\"right\"/>",
    "outputPath": "path/to/repaired_document.docx"
  }
}

3. Safety & Integrity Guidelines

  • Always verify that replacement XML tags are balanced and correctly namespaced (xmlns:w="...").
  • Use inspect_word_document or convert_word_to_markdown after modifications to confirm document readability.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
