analyzing-powershell-script-block-logging

analyzing-powershell-script-block-logging is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from marysatasselshaped667/skills-collection-1. It costs 88 tokens per session (564 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of analyzing-powershell-script-block-logging, MIT.

A workflow for reading Windows PowerShell Script Block logs, which record the contents of PowerShell commands that ran.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to parse EVTX log files, rebuild multi-part scripts, and look for Base64 commands, download tools, obfuscation, and security-tool bypasses.
Why use it?
It helps reconstruct split or hidden commands and detect encoded payloads, downloads, and techniques that evade simple text searches.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00088 $0.00564
Opus 5 $0.00044 $0.00282
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00113
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

analyzing-powershell-script-block-logging scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/agent.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Analyzing PowerShell Script Block Logging

When to Use

  • When investigating security incidents that require analyzing powershell script block logging
  • When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain
  • When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type
  • When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with security operations concepts and tools
  • Access to a test or lab environment for safe execution
  • Python 3.8+ with required dependencies installed
  • Appropriate authorization for any testing activities

Instructions

  1. Install dependencies: pip install python-evtx lxml
  2. Collect PowerShell Operational logs: Microsoft-Windows-PowerShell%4Operational.evtx
  3. Parse Event ID 4104 entries using python-evtx to extract ScriptBlockText, ScriptBlockId, and MessageNumber/MessageTotal for multi-part script reconstruction.
  4. Apply detection heuristics:
    • Base64-encoded commands (-EncodedCommand, FromBase64String)
    • Download cradles (DownloadString, DownloadFile, Invoke-WebRequest, Net.WebClient)
    • AMSI bypass patterns (AmsiUtils, amsiInitFailed)
    • Obfuscation indicators (high entropy, tick-mark insertion, string concatenation)
  5. Generate a report with reconstructed scripts, risk scores, and MITRE ATT&CK mappings.
python scripts/agent.py --evtx-file /path/to/PowerShell-Operational.evtx --output ps_analysis.json

Examples

Detect Encoded Command Execution

import base64
if "-encodedcommand" in script_text.lower():
    encoded = script_text.split()[-1]
    decoded = base64.b64decode(encoded).decode("utf-16-le")

Reconstruct Multi-Block Script

Scripts split across multiple 4104 events share a ScriptBlockId. Concatenate blocks ordered by MessageNumber to recover the full script.

Files

What ships with it

3 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
