behavior-probes

behavior-probes is a skill for Claude Code from melodic-software/claude-code-plugins. It costs 84 tokens per session (1,697 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for running controlled, live tests of Claude Code behaviour, including permissions, automatic modes, hooks, worktrees, subagents, and sandboxes. It records each case as passing, failing, or inconclusive and is dry-run by default.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to rerun documented behaviour cases, compare a test with its control case, and record the result together with the Claude Code version.
Why use it?
It checks assumptions about how the coding environment behaves instead of relying on undocumented or uncertain behaviour.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00084 $0.01697
Opus 5.5 $0.00034 $0.00679
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00339
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00170

Security

Grade A, and why

behavior-probes scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 12 executable files (cases/auto-mode/ask-rule-denies-in-print-mode/scaffold.sh, cases/auto-mode/bot-thread-resolve-allowed-with-allow-entry/scaffold.sh, cases/auto-mode/bot-thread-resolve-conditional-allow-denied/scaffold.sh, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 101 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Purpose

Our conventions rest on platform behavior no doc settles: whether a hook allow skips the auto-mode classifier, what an ask rule becomes under claude -p, where EnterWorktree stops asking. This skill holds each such behavior as a case and reruns it on demand, so a recheck is one command instead of a bespoke script. Outcomes are recorded in records.md.

claude plugin eval cannot carry these cases: a case there cannot set permission rules, autoMode, a permission mode or project settings, and its runs remove ungranted tools instead of deciding them. Pointer: when that question comes up again, fetch https://code.claude.com/docs/en/plugin-evals live. As of: 2026-10-08. Recheck trigger: a release note adding per-case settings or permission mode to plugin eval.

The runner is a script bundled here rather than a plugin bin/ executable, because some surfaces refuse a plugin with a top-level bin/. Pointer: when deciding whether this plugin can ship a bin/, fetch https://code.claude.com/docs/en/plugins/components#executables live. As of: 2026-10-08. Recheck trigger: that section stops naming surfaces that refuse a bin/.

Actions

<probe> is python3 "${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/probe.py".

Action Command Cost
validate <probe> validate none
dry-run (default) <probe> run --dry-run none: scaffolds run, claude is replaced by a fake
live <probe> run --live [--case <id>]... [--area <area>]... [--retries 1] real model runs, capped
recheck <probe> recheck --changelog <file> --range <A..B> none
table <probe> table <results.jsonl> none
rejudge <probe> rejudge --out <dir of a live run> none: re-reads the saved streams after an expect.json fix

Run live only when the user asks for a live run in this turn. Before it, state how many cases it selects and the ceilings in force (--max-runs, --max-cost-usd, each case's max_budget_usd); a case past a ceiling is reported skipped, never run, and each case's budget is cut to what the suite ceiling leaves. For what a run costs, point at Manage costs.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

behavior-probes is a skill published in the GitHub repository melodic-software/claude-code-plugins (25 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 84 tokens to every session and 1,697 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-10.
