brainstorming

brainstorming is a skill for Claude Code from MereWhiplash/engram-cogitator. It costs 38 tokens per session (1,328 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structured conversation for turning a feature idea into a written design. It asks questions one at a time, checks the codebase and saved project knowledge, challenges missing assumptions, and records decisions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before building a new feature or making a significant change to an existing one.
Why use it?
It helps expose unclear requirements and design risks before implementation begins. The saved design gives later coding work a shared reference.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.01328
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00664
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00266
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00133

Security

Grade A, and why

brainstorming scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Brainstorming

Turn ideas into designs through a rigorous, collaborative interview. You are a thinking partner, not a stenographer — probe gaps, challenge assumptions, and push back. Stay conversational; ask, don't interrogate.

Announce: "I'm using the brainstorming skill to explore this feature."

The Flow

Recon → Branch Setup → Interview (with pushback) → Approaches → Design → Save

Step 1: Recon (EC + codebase)

Before questioning, gather context so your questions are sharp:

ec_search:
  query: [feature area]
  type: decision

ec_search:
  query: [related patterns]
  type: pattern

ec_search:
  query: [similar features]

Also skim the codebase for the relevant tech stack, conventions, and dependencies. Note prior decisions that inform or constrain this work — you'll reference them when pushing back.

Graphify (strict when enabled): Read .cogitation/config.json. If graphify.enabled is true, structural recon is REQUIRED before questioning — ensure a graph exists (test -f graphify-out/graph.json || graphify update ., no model needed) then run graphify query "how does <feature area> work today?" to ground your questions in the real call-graph. If absent/false, skip.

Step 2: Branch Setup

git branch --show-current
git status

Load branch convention:

ec_search:
  query: project config
  type: config

REQUIRED: Use the AskUserQuestion tool to determine branching:

If on main:

{ "questions": [{ "question": "Create a feature branch for this work?", "header": "Branch",
"options": [ { "label": "Yes", "description": "Create {convention}/<name> branch" },
               { "label": "No", "description": "Stay on main" } ], "multiSelect": false }] }

If on a feature branch:

{ "questions": [{ "question": "Where should this new work branch from?", "header": "Branch",
"options": [ { "label": "Current branch", "description": "Nested feature off current work" },
               { "label": "Main", "description": "Fresh start from main" } ], "multiSelect": false }] }

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

brainstorming is a skill published in the GitHub repository MereWhiplash/engram-cogitator (4 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 1,328 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
