metagit-stamp

metagit-stamp is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from metagit-ai/metagit-cli. It costs 48 tokens per session (487 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for creating or refreshing a local .metagit.yml file, which records basic information about a project or repository.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to initialize or refresh a project manifest, detect repository information, save the result, and validate the completed configuration.
Why use it?
It updates project metadata from detected repository details and can be run repeatedly without rebuilding the file by hand.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.00487
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00244
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00097
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00049

Security

Grade A, and why

metagit-stamp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Manifest Stamping (Non-Umbrella)

Use this skill to create or refresh a project-local .metagit.yml for a target folder that should behave like a lightweight atlas.

Use when

  • User asks to create a new local .metagit.yml for an app/repo folder
  • User asks to refresh stale metadata in an existing non-umbrella manifest
  • User wants an idempotent detect-and-update flow rather than hand-editing every field

Workflow

  1. Resolve the target folder and verify it exists.
  2. Ensure a base manifest exists in that folder:
    • if missing: initialize one
    • if present: keep it and refresh
  3. Run repository detection for auto-filled metadata.
  4. Persist the result to .metagit.yml in the target folder.
  5. Validate and report what changed.

Commands

Run from the target folder unless an explicit path is provided.

# initialize only when missing
metagit init

# detect + save (idempotent refresh)
metagit detect repository --path . --save --force --config-path .metagit.yml --output summary

# validate stamped manifest
metagit config validate --config-path .metagit.yml

Path-targeted variant:

metagit detect repository --path /path/to/target --save --force --config-path /path/to/target/.metagit.yml --output summary
metagit config validate --config-path /path/to/target/.metagit.yml

Output contract

Return:

  • target path
  • whether manifest was created or refreshed
  • detection mode used (detect repository --save)
  • validation result
  • key stamped fields (name/kind/language/framework/package manager, if detected)

Safety

  • This skill is for non-umbrella project manifests, not workspace controller manifests.
  • Do not overwrite unrelated files; only update .metagit.yml.
  • Prefer idempotent refreshes over destructive resets.
  • If the user needs multi-repo workspace orchestration, switch to metagit-projects instead.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

metagit-stamp is a skill published in the GitHub repository metagit-ai/metagit-cli (3 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 487 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
