hf-cli

hf-cli is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from metaspartan/cybara. It costs 30 tokens per session (392 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to the current hf command-line tool for managing Hugging Face Hub models, datasets, Spaces, repositories, caches, authentication, and downloads.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect and manage Hugging Face resources, check account access, preview downloads, clean caches, and upload bounded files or folders.
Why use it?
It reduces mistakes when inspecting repositories, downloading files, handling credentials, or making changes that could affect stored data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00030 $0.00392
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00196
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00078
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00039

Measured 3d ago against content hash 5c00d0ac0df6, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

hf-cli scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Hugging Face CLI

Use the current hf CLI for Hub operations. Do not use the deprecated huggingface-cli command.

Workflow

  1. Run hf version and hf --help before relying on a command that may vary by installed version.
  2. Use public read-only operations without authentication when possible.
  3. For private or write operations, run hf auth whoami without printing stored tokens.
  4. Prefer structured output such as --format json when another tool will consume the result.
  5. Use --dry-run when supported before downloads, cache cleanup, synchronization, or deletion.
  6. Confirm the repository, revision, visibility, and affected paths before uploads or destructive changes.

Common operations

hf models info namespace/model --format json
hf models list --search "query" --limit 20 --format json
hf datasets info namespace/dataset --format json
hf datasets list --search "query" --limit 20 --format json
hf download namespace/model --include "*.json" --dry-run
hf cache list --limit 30
hf papers list --limit 20 --format json

Use hf upload for a bounded file or directory and hf upload-large-folder for resumable large uploads. Never place a token in command arguments, source files, logs, or chat output. Use the authenticated credential store or HF_TOKEN environment variable.

If hf is unavailable, report that prerequisite clearly. Do not install software unless the user requested installation.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

hf-cli is a skill published in the GitHub repository metaspartan/cybara (25 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 30 tokens to every session and 392 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
