compare-key-terms

compare-key-terms is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from microsoft/cat-agent-skills. It costs 153 tokens per session (2,452 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structured comparison of the same legal and commercial fields across several documents, with each value linked to an exact quotation and clause location. The result can be delivered in chat, a Word document, or an Excel grid when the user chooses the format.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to compare items such as contract terms across agreements in a consistent table or grid. It is a review aid, not a risk assessment, legal opinion, or obligations tracker.
Why use it?
It prevents important terms from being extracted differently from each document and makes every comparison point checkable against its source.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00153 $0.02452
Opus 5.5 $0.00061 $0.00981
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00031 $0.00490
Haiku 4.5 $0.00015 $0.00245

Security

Grade A, and why

compare-key-terms scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 158 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Compare key terms

Apply one consistent extraction schema across every document in scope and deliver the comparison in the medium the user selected. The output is a structured review aid — not a risk assessment, a legal opinion, or a substitute for verification against the source documents.

Required delivery decision

Before reading sources, defining the schema, or loading a file creation skill, determine whether the user explicitly selected the output medium. The medium defines the deliverable and the execution path; it is not a formatting preference and must not be inferred.

If the user already specified a choice, honour it and do not ask again. Otherwise your first action is a question card, whose first question is Where would you like the output delivered?, offering exactly, in this order: In Chat, As a Word Document, As an Excel. Do not mark any option recommended or default. Stop and wait. Words such as "compare", "extract", "grid", "table" or "summary" do not themselves select a delivery choice.

When NOT to Use

  • Obligations, deadlines, notice periods and who must do what by when — use extract-obligations-and-deadlines.
  • A document against a term sheet, heads of terms or other agreed commercial terms — out of scope for this skill.
  • A document against legislation, a rulebook or an internal policy — use identify-regulatory-gaps.
  • Comparing tracked changes between versions — use summarize-redlines.
  • The same fields across jurisdictions rather than across documents — use compare-across-jurisdictions.
  • Deriving standard positions and fallbacks from precedent — use create-playbook.
  • Drafting, editing or redlining — use edit-contract.
  • A spreadsheet with no legal extraction schema (a budget, a model, an ordinary tracker) — use Cowork's built-in Excel workbook creator.
  • Legal advice, enforceability, market standard benchmarking, negotiation positions or risk scoring.

Hand-off rule. If a request, or part of one, matches an item above that names another skill, do not do that part here — even when the documents are already open and the work looks quick. Name the skill that handles it (for example, "That part is a job for extract-obligations-and-deadlines") and stop that part; finish only what belongs to this skill. If the named skill is not installed, say so plainly and do not attempt it here.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
