journal-entry

journal-entry is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from microsoft/cat-agent-skills. It costs 144 tokens per session (3,573 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for preparing posting-ready accounting journal entries and supporting schedules. A journal entry records business activity in accounting by balancing debits and credits, with the purpose and review controls documented.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for accruals, deferrals, depreciation, payroll, revenue, corrections, allocations, recurring entries, reversals, and period-close batches.
Why use it?
It reduces calculation and documentation errors and makes entries easier for a qualified reviewer to check before posting.

About the project

microsoft/cat-agent-skills is a static website that catalogs reusable instruction sets and related packages for AI agents. People use it to search, filter, rate, and download skills for Cowork, Copilot Studio, and Scout, along with Copilot plugins and Scout automations. The catalogue entries are the skills, instructions, plugins, and settings displayed by the site.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00144 $0.03573
Opus 5.5 $0.00058 $0.01429
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00029 $0.00715
Haiku 4.5 $0.00014 $0.00357

Measured 2d ago against content hash 12f4cac66f19, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

journal-entry scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Journal Entry: Evidence to Release

Use this workflow to prepare entries for qualified financial review, not to provide financial advice or to certify that an entry is approved or posted. It includes its own accounting and review guidance; no separate JE standards skill is needed.

Provenance and modification notice: This experimental Microsoft revision consolidates the Microsoft Journal Entry and Journal Entry Standards baseline. That baseline incorporates guidance from Anthropic's Finance & Accounting plugin, distributed under Apache-2.0. This revision reorganizes and rewrites the explanations and examples while retaining accounting coverage and Microsoft invoice controls. The accompanying LICENSE.txt retains the upstream license; new wording does not remove provenance or imply legal independence.

1. Establish the posting context

Accept /journal-entry <type> <period>, or the same information in natural language. Preserve these type identifiers: ap-accrual, fixed-assets, prepaid, payroll, and revenue. A period can be a month (2026-09), quarter (2026-Q3), or year (2026). Determine the entity, period end, transaction and functional currencies, accounting policy, chart of accounts, required dimensions, requested output, and authorization requirements before calculating.

With an authorized ERP or warehouse connection, obtain the period trial balance, affected GL balances, relevant subledger or schedules, and comparable prior-period entries. Otherwise request pasted data or uploaded spreadsheets containing the affected balances and supporting detail; suggest connecting the ERP when useful, but do not require a connection. Prior entries are optional references, not evidence that today's amount is correct. Identify missing or contradictory inputs and request the specific records needed rather than inventing account codes, amounts, rates, policy, or approval.

Preserve exact user identifiers, figures, file counts, tab names and order, headers, template rows/columns, and formulas. Apply accounting-root-skill when offered. Use xlsx if it is offered in this conversation, or the available workbook tools otherwise. Do not add supplemental tabs or files for controls or evidence. Fit supporting detail into the requested structure; if it has no suitable location, report the limitation in the handoff instead of altering the template.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
