variance-commentary

variance-commentary is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from microsoft/cat-agent-skills. It costs 150 tokens per session (1,320 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A short explanation of actual results compared with a plan, forecast, previous year, or previous quarter. It organises each segment's headline result, causes, and expected direction.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for management reviews, board slides, controller emails, or other commentary on financial variances.
Why use it?
It turns an existing financial comparison into clear review language without pretending to calculate the variance or prove its causes. This helps readers understand what changed and why.

About the project

microsoft/cat-agent-skills is a static website that catalogs reusable instruction sets and related packages for AI agents. People use it to search, filter, rate, and download skills for Cowork, Copilot Studio, and Scout, along with Copilot plugins and Scout automations. The catalogue entries are the skills, instructions, plugins, and settings displayed by the site.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00150 $0.01320
Opus 5.5 $0.00060 $0.00528
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00030 $0.00264
Haiku 4.5 $0.00015 $0.00132

Measured 2d ago against content hash 7101b520b8da, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

variance-commentary scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Variance Commentary

Produces exec-ready variance narrative: short, fact-anchored blocks that drop straight into review slides, a controller email, or board prep.

When NOT to Use

  • Computing the variance or decomposing drivers in a model → spreadsheet or BI work first
  • General stakeholder emails not anchored to a variance → outside this skill's scope
  • Operational or headcount narratives with no financial comparison → write directly
  • Forecast-change rationale not tied to an actuals comparison → write directly

Hand off rather than overlap:

  • Prep for the review where the variance is presented — use forecast-review-prep instead.
  • Anticipating questions on the variance — use stakeholder-qa-prep instead.
  • Broad stakeholder messaging — outside this skill's scope.
  • Recurring deliverables emails — use quarterly-workback instead.

Workflow

1. Capture the inputs

From the user's message or recent context, establish:

  • Metric — whatever the business actually tracks (revenue, bookings, margin, operating expense, cash, units, backlog)
  • Segment or business — the reporting unit in scope
  • Period — the fiscal period, in the user's own fiscal convention
  • Comparison basis — versus plan, forecast, prior year, or prior quarter
  • Magnitude — both the absolute variance and the percentage
  • Known drivers — what the user already attributes it to

Ask only for what's genuinely missing, and ask once. Multiple segments in one request produce one block per segment.

Do not assume a fiscal calendar. If the period is ambiguous ("Q3"), confirm the convention rather than guessing between calendar and fiscal years.

2. Ground the drivers when thin

If the user supplied no drivers or only one, run m365_search-SearchM365 with sources=["email","teams"] on the metric, period, and segment over the last 30 days. Surface what you find. If search comes back empty, the block says "Driver TBD pending review" — never invent a plausible cause.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
