add-backend

add-backend is a skill for Claude Code from microsoft/managed-apps. It costs 46 tokens per session (489 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A procedure for adding a Rayfin backend to an app, including database entities, permissions, and a client connection. Rayfin is used here as the app's backend and data service, and the procedure only applies when its feature is enabled.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when explicitly adding a database backend, creating data models and permissions, or connecting the app's client to Rayfin.
Why use it?
It provides a checked setup path for adding stored data without bypassing dependency or feature-gate errors.

About the project

Microsoft Managed Apps is a project for building custom web applications with React, TypeScript, and Vite, and it provides Microsoft's official templates and development tooling. Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.00489
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00196
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00098
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00049

Measured 4d ago against content hash 7dbfb00dfcbe, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

add-backend scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Shared instructions: shared-instructions.md

Add an app backend

Required first: pass the Rayfin feature gate.

1. Set up the database

If rayfin/rayfin.yml exists, use the existing configuration. Otherwise, run:

ms app add backend --provider rayfin --json

This creates the backend configuration, TypeScript configuration and rayfin/data/. Keep the existing app layout and exclude rayfin/.temp/ from version control.

This prepares the app's backend definitions; it does not provision a database. Rayfin is the app backend, not an existing database to select or connect to.

2. Install dependencies

Run from the app root before continuing so the declared dependencies and their version-matched docs are available in node_modules:

npm install

Use the app's existing package manager and lockfile if it does not use npm. Report installation or peer-dependency errors; do not force-install or downgrade the app to bypass them. Add missing direct dependencies only as required by the implementation described in the references.

3. Implement and check the app

Read the installed package docs identified in these references, then follow them in order:

When invoked from /create-app, complete data modeling in Step 9 and return the entity/client paths; that workflow handles UI implementation and checks in Steps 10-11. Standalone use continues through both references.

4. Follow the app lifecycle

Use the normal app build and deploy workflow, not a separate Rayfin provisioning workflow.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
