update-plugin-release

update-plugin-release is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from microsoft/postgres-skills. It costs 52 tokens per session (780 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository-maintenance workflow for releasing a Postgres Skills plugin. It updates version details, marketplace listings, and changelogs using semantic versioning, where releases are classified as major, minor, or patch changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when preparing a plugin release, selecting the version number, updating manifests, or maintaining release notes.
Why use it?
It reduces the chance of choosing an inconsistent version or forgetting one of the release files. It also distinguishes prepared changes from releases that have actually been tagged or published.

About the project

Microsoft Postgres Skills is a plugin that gives AI coding agents PostgreSQL guidance and database tools, including a local PostgreSQL MCP server for connecting an agent to a database. It helps application developers, database administrators, platform engineers, and AI application developers build, troubleshoot, and operate PostgreSQL systems in local, self-hosted, and cloud environments. The catalogue entries are the plugin's skills, tools, and related agent workflows.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00052 $0.00780
Opus 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00312
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00156
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00078

Security

Grade A, and why

update-plugin-release scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Update plugin release

This is a repository-maintenance skill, not part of the distributed plugin. Keep it under .github/skills/, outside the installable plugin/ payload.

Choose the semantic version

Inspect the current manifests, plugin changelog, Git history, and release tags before choosing a version. Distinguish a prepared version from a tagged or published release; do not infer publication from a manifest alone. If the user specifies a target version, use it unless it conflicts with the release history or the policy below; explain the conflict before proceeding.

Use Semantic Versioning (MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH):

  • Patch: backward-compatible fixes and documentation refinements.
  • Minor: new backward-compatible capabilities, including new skill reference topics that enable additional workflows.
  • Major: incompatible changes to an established public interface at 1.0.0 or later.
  • Before 1.0.0, use a minor bump for new capabilities or breaking changes, and a patch bump for compatible fixes. Describe breaking changes explicitly. Do not move to 1.0.0 without a user decision to declare a stable interface.

Choose the highest required bump across the pending changes. Do not bump again merely because a prepared release is being edited.

Update the plugin and listing versions

Set the same plugin version in all three host manifests:

  • plugin/plugin.json
  • plugin/.claude-plugin/plugin.json
  • plugin/.codex-plugin/plugin.json

Update the postgres-skills entry's version in all marketplace entrypoints:

  • .github/plugin/marketplace.json
  • .claude-plugin/marketplace.json
  • .agents/plugins/marketplace.json

Keep the marketplace entrypoints identical. Leave their metadata.version unchanged: it versions the marketplace independently and is outside this skill's scope. Do not change MCP dependency versions unless the requested release includes that change.

Maintain the changelogs

In plugin/CHANGELOG.md, group the release's changes under its version and date using Added, Changed, Fixed, or other applicable Keep a Changelog categories. Move the included pending changes out of [Unreleased], retaining that heading for subsequent work. Use the actual preparation date; do not invent a publication date. Keep version links accurate and use existing commits rather than links to tags that do not exist.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
