automate

automate is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from microsoft/vscode. It costs 40 tokens per session (1,064 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool that turns a task idea into a proposed automation, such as scheduled work run by a local or cloud agent, and creates it after you approve the details.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to repeat a completed task, create a scheduled report or file job, or define another reusable local or cloud agent task.
Why use it?
It prevents vague or duplicate automations by clarifying the task, inputs, scope, result, and schedule before setup.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.01064
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00426
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00213
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00106

Security

Grade A, and why

automate scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Propose an Automation

Infer the task

  • After completed work, bare /automate repeats its relevant goal, inputs, scope, and result, not the whole chat.
  • Brief /automate guidance refines the relevant prior task; fill gaps from that context.
  • In a fresh chat, build a concrete reusable task from the explanation without inventing prior work.
  • With no useful context, offer two or three examples, including a local file/report task, before discovering tools or providers. Invite a custom goal; suggestions are not choices.

Establish task and result before setup/discovery. Ask what success should produce or do only when unclear; reuse known answers.

Ask one concept per question, titled by the missing input, such as "Repositories to check". Batch related questions in the same turn or form instead of serial follow-ups. Suggest answers; mark unresolved choices as undecided. Read discovery output with file/search tools, not shell. Do not inspect task files, execute tasks, or request permissions merely to draft.

Shape the draft

Use listAutomations to verify capabilities and duplicates before configuration; mention only relevant matches. Missing, loading, or partial information is unverified, not an empty catalog. Retry usefully, never an unchanged authentication failure. Explain blocked verification; use only ready-catalog cloud tool IDs and fields supported by the current creation tool.

For work centered on a supplied folder, prefer that folder; otherwise suggest Chat. Prefer the current harness, or Copilot if unknown. Preserve explicit target, isolation, provider, model, reasoning, and permission choices. Explain unsupported choices rather than substituting them.

Focus on user decisions, not discovery results, provider counts, machine requirements, or confirmation reassurances. Discuss limitations only when requested or blocking; mention unavailable cloud only for a cloud request. Validate repository access through supported tools before creation.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
