debug-tag-add

debug-tag-add is a skill for Codex from midFang/ai-agent-skills-workflow. It costs 79 tokens per session (556 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A procedure for adding temporary, searchable diagnostic log messages for one specific bug. It uses one fixed label and places logs at key decision points so the relevant path can be traced.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it while reproducing a bug to record incoming events, matching results, important flags, errors, and the final action. Remove or search for the shared label when the investigation is finished.
Why use it?
It helps explain why code took the wrong branch or ended in the wrong state without creating permanent noisy logging. It also keeps secrets and large sensitive data out of the logs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00079 $0.00556
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.00278
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00111
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

debug-tag-add scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Debug Tag Add

Use this skill to add temporary diagnostic logs for one specific issue. The goal is to make user-provided logs enough to locate the missed branch or wrong state, while keeping the change easy to remove later.

Workflow

  1. Identify the exact bug scenario, expected behavior, actual behavior, and the state machine or entry points involved.
  2. Choose one fixed tag for the whole investigation. Prefer a short issue-specific tag such as CastCloseDebug; if the user provides a tag, use it exactly.
  3. Add logs only at decision boundaries that can explain the bug:
    • state/event received
    • target/session matching result
    • key flags used by branching logic
    • error code/message/description
    • final branch/action chosen
  4. Keep logs temporary and searchable. Use the same tag string in every added log line.
  5. Avoid logging secrets, tokens, cookies, request bodies with personal data, full URLs with credentials, or large binary/text payloads.
  6. Prefer existing project logging helpers and style. Do not introduce a new logging framework.
  7. Run a search for the tag before finishing so the user knows exactly what to filter in Logcat or other logs.

Log Shape

Each log should answer: "where am I, which object/session is this, what condition values matter, and what branch will happen?"

Good examples:

logD(
    "CastCloseDebug",
    "start bridge state: type=${state::class.simpleName}, " +
        "matchesCurrentTarget=$matchesCurrentTarget, belongsToCurrentTarget=$belongsToCurrentTarget, " +
        "errorCode=${state.error?.errorCode}, showDialog=${state.showDialog}",
)
logD(
    "CastCloseDebug",
    "global disconnected: deviceId=${deviceId.orEmpty()}, " +
        "wasConnected=$wasConnected, hadEstablishedSession=$hadEstablishedSession, " +
        "willShowDeviceClosed=$shouldShowDeviceClosedDialog",
)

Finish Criteria

  • Tell the user the fixed tag to filter.
  • Mention the main files or code paths instrumented.
  • Make clear the logs are temporary and should be removed after the issue is confirmed fixed.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
