principle-exhaust-the-design-space

principle-exhaust-the-design-space is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from minghinmatthewlam/agent-guards. It costs 41 tokens per session (222 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of principle-exhaust-the-design-space, MIT.

A decision-making method for unfamiliar user interactions or software architecture. It calls for building two or three genuinely different sketches or prototypes and comparing them before choosing one.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for new interface patterns, architectural choices with several viable solutions, and product decisions that depend on how an interaction feels. It is not intended for routine fixes or established patterns.
Why use it?
Committing to the first plausible idea can make a poor design expensive to replace. Side-by-side alternatives expose tradeoffs before the main implementation begins.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00041 $0.00222
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00089
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00044
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00022

Security

Grade A, and why

principle-exhaust-the-design-space scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Exhaust the Design Space

When a novel interaction or architectural decision has no established precedent, explore several concrete alternatives before implementation. Building the wrong thing costs more than exploring three options.

The rule. When the right answer is not obvious, build 2-3 competing prototypes or sketches. Compare them side by side. Only then commit. Design it twice is this rule by another name. A second flavor of the first shape does not count.

When it applies:

  • Novel UI interactions (no prior art in the codebase)
  • Architectural choices with multiple viable approaches
  • Product design decisions where user experience depends on feel, not logic

When it doesn't:

  • Mechanical implementation where the pattern is established
  • Bug fixes or refactors with a clear target state
  • Changes where constraints dictate a single viable approach

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
