narration

narration is a skill for Claude Code from motlin/claude-code-plugins. It costs 40 tokens per session (671 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A skill that turns text or a web page into spoken audio with Gemini text-to-speech. It can make single narrations, compare voices, and create chaptered audiobooks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to narrate an article or URL, create an audiobook from a book, clean source text before reading, or compare voices on a short sample.
Why use it?
It removes the manual work of preparing source text, choosing a voice, and producing audio files for written content.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00671
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00268
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00067

Security

Grade A, and why

narration scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 20d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 54 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Narration

Resolve <plugin-root> before running the bundled script: ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} in Claude Code; in Codex, the plugin root containing this skills/narration/SKILL.md. If GEMINI_API_KEY is not set, ask where the key lives; never print it or write it to a file.

Prepare the text

Extract only the prose to be read: drop navigation, bylines, footnote markers, comment sections, and subscription prompts. For a book, write a manifest with one entry per chapter:

{
	"title": "The Example Book",
	"author": "Alice Author",
	"chapters": [
		{ "title": "Chapter 1", "text": "First paragraph.\n\nSecond paragraph." },
		{ "title": "Chapter 2", "text": "..." }
	]
}

Each chapter title is spoken before its text. A single article is a manifest with one chapter. Keep the manifest and all output out of the repository's tracked files, and keep the source text out of the conversation.

Choose a voice on a short sample

Settle the voice and style on a few sentences before paying for a long narration:

python3 <plugin-root>/scripts/narrate.py voices \
    --text-file sample.txt --output-directory voice-samples

Narrow it with --voices Charon,Kore. Add --style "professional audiobook narration" before voices to compare a style against the neutral samples on the same page. Tell the user the path to index.html and let them open it themselves.

Pace words are strong: "unhurried" slowed narration about 15%, and "brisk quick pace" sped it up 11% to 24%. Neutral delivery is already close to audiobook pace, so add a pace word only when the user asks for one, in their wording.

Narrate

Narrate one chapter first and let the user listen before narrating the rest:

python3 <plugin-root>/scripts/narrate.py --style "professional audiobook narration" book \
    --manifest manifest.json --output-directory audiobook --voice Charon --chapters 1

Then run the same command without --chapters to get every chapter's MP3 plus book.m4b with chapter markers. Cached chunks are not billed again. Use a separate output directory for each voice or style variant so one never overwrites another. Report the output paths and total duration, and say when a run replaces an earlier version.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

narration is a skill published in the GitHub repository motlin/claude-code-plugins (20 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 671 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-01.
