excel-writing

excel-writing is a skill for Claude Code from mrgorrin40-TP/mcp-excel-server. It costs 17 tokens per session (1,387 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool for creating and changing Excel spreadsheet files (.xlsx), including their cells, ranges, and worksheets.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create spreadsheets, enter values into cells, add worksheets, and update existing Excel files.
Why use it?
It removes the need to edit spreadsheet files by hand or write custom file-handling code. It requires a running MCP Excel Server and an absolute file path.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00017 $0.01387
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00694
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00277
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00139

Security

Grade A, and why

excel-writing scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Excel Writing Skill

This skill enables AI agents to create, modify, and write data to Excel files (.xlsx) using the MCP Excel Server.

When to Use

Use this skill when the user wants to:

  • Create a new Excel file
  • Write data to cells or ranges
  • Add formulas to worksheets
  • Create new worksheets
  • Update existing spreadsheets

Prerequisites

  • MCP Excel Server must be running and configured
  • Write permissions to the target directory
  • File path must be absolute

Writing Strategies

1. Writing Single Cells

Use write_cell for individual values:

Tool: write_cell
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  cell: "A1"
  value: "Hello World"

Supported Value Types:

  • Strings: "text"
  • Numbers: 42, 3.14
  • Booleans: true, false
  • Dates: ISO format strings

2. Writing Ranges

Use write_range for multiple cells:

Tool: write_range
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  range: "A1:C3"
  values: [
    ["Name", "Age", "City"],
    ["Alice", 25, "New York"],
    ["Bob", 30, "London"]
  ]

Best Practices:

  • Values must match range dimensions
  • Use nested arrays for rows
  • Headers should be in first row

3. Writing Formulas

Use write_formula for Excel formulas:

Tool: write_formula
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  cell: "D1"
  formula: "=SUM(A1:C1)"

Formula Tips:

  • Use standard Excel formula syntax
  • Formulas are recalculated on save
  • Use relative references (A1) or absolute ($A$1)

4. Creating New Sheets

Use create_sheet to add worksheets:

Tool: create_sheet
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "NewSheet"

Notes:

  • Sheet names must be unique
  • Maximum 31 characters
  • No special characters: /*?[]:

Common Workflows

Workflow 1: Create New Spreadsheet

  1. Call create_sheet to add worksheets
  2. Call write_range to add headers
  3. Call write_range to add data rows
  4. Call write_formula for calculated columns

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
