Excel Writing Skill

This skill enables AI agents to create, modify, and write data to Excel files (.xlsx) using the MCP Excel Server.

When to Use

Use this skill when the user wants to:

• Create a new Excel file
• Write data to cells or ranges
• Add formulas to worksheets
• Create new worksheets
• Update existing spreadsheets

Prerequisites

• MCP Excel Server must be running and configured
• Write permissions to the target directory
• File path must be absolute

Writing Strategies

1. Writing Single Cells

Use write_cell for individual values:

Tool: write_cell
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  cell: "A1"
  value: "Hello World"

Supported Value Types:

• Strings: "text"
• Numbers: 42, 3.14
• Booleans: true, false
• Dates: ISO format strings

2. Writing Ranges

Use write_range for multiple cells:

Tool: write_range
Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  range: "A1:C3"
  values: [
    ["Name", "Age", "City"],
    ["Alice", 25, "New York"],
    ["Bob", 30, "London"]
  ]

Best Practices:

• Values must match range dimensions
• Use nested arrays for rows
• Headers should be in first row

3. Writing Formulas

Use write_formula for Excel formulas:

Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "Sheet1"
  cell: "D1"
  formula: "=SUM(A1:C1)"

Formula Tips:

• Use standard Excel formula syntax
• Formulas are recalculated on save
• Use relative references (A1) or absolute ($A$1)

4. Creating New Sheets

Use create_sheet to add worksheets:

Parameters:
  file_path: "absolute/path/to/file.xlsx"
  sheet_name: "NewSheet"

Notes:

• Sheet names must be unique
• Maximum 31 characters
• No special characters: /*?[]:
