- **System boundaries**: What code you own vs. external services
- **Component map**: Major modules/services and their single responsibilities
- **Data flow**: How data moves through the system (request → response)
- **Integration points**: External APIs, third-party services, databases
- **Architecture pattern**: Monolith / microservices / serverless / hybrid + rationale
