local-budget: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/budget-monthly-brief/SKILL.md

budget-monthly-brief is a skill for Claude Code from natejswenson/local-budget. It costs 42 tokens per session (781 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A budgeting guide for preparing a monthly financial summary. The summary covers spending, income, the difference between them, spending categories, saving ideas, unusual charges, and recurring payments.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to prepare a monthly money report, review spending trends, identify possible savings, flag unusual charges, and check subscriptions.
Why use it?
It sets an ordered process for collecting the figures and limits unsupported conclusions. It also requires confirmation before saving the summary.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00781
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.00391
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00156
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00078

Security

Grade A, and why

budget-monthly-brief scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 63 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Budget Monthly Brief

Compose the period brief. Follow the budget-analyst discipline: never invent a number, print each tool's rendered block verbatim, then add at most three sentences of synthesis per section.

Compose the brief (read tools, in order)

  1. get_month_summary — the headline: spent, income, net, AND the numbered "Where it goes" category table (this is the brief's category section — do NOT also call get_category_breakdown here: two numbered lists of the same rows in one turn make every row reference ambiguous by construction; keep get_category_breakdown for later drill-downs only).
  2. monthly_trend — the spend trend across recent months.
  3. insights — concrete ways to save.
  4. find_anomalies — unusual charges worth flagging (pass the brief's month so the rendered block is scoped, not two years of history).
  5. recurring_charges — subscriptions and recurring flags.

Print each tool's rendered block verbatim. The brief reads: spent / income / net → where it goes → ways to save → flags.

Save the brief (write — confirm first)

After composing, offer to save the brief with save_brief. Confirm before writing: show the user the exact brief text you would save and get an explicit "yes" before calling save_brief. If the user declines, leave it unsaved.

Visual report (on demand)

After the save-brief question resolves (yes or no), offer one more thing: "Want this as a visual report too?"

If yes: confirm, then call render_report(period, narrative) — the deterministic renderer builds the whole page (stat row → spend-vs-budget chart → trend → flags) server-side and writes reports/budget-report-<period>.pdf (gitignored, 0600). The optional narrative is 1-3 plain-text sentences grounded ONLY in figures from rendered blocks already printed this conversation — it's the one free-text slot on the page; never restate numbers from memory into it. Print the tool's rendered confirmation verbatim: the path is the user's to open, move, or delete. Regenerating the same period overwrites that period's PDF; different periods never collide.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
