faiss

faiss is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from nativ3ai/hermes-agent-camel. It costs 66 tokens per session (1,393 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of faiss, MIT.

A software library for finding items that are most similar to a query in large collections of number-based data, called vectors. FAISS, developed by Facebook AI Research, can search these vectors on a CPU or GPU.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for nearest-neighbor search, finding similar text or images from their vector representations, large-scale retrieval, and offline or batch processing.
Why use it?
It avoids checking every stored vector one by one when the collection is very large. It is intended for similarity search itself, rather than filtering records by extra fields or providing full database features.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00066 $0.01393
Opus 5 $0.00033 $0.00696
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00279
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00139

Security

Grade A, and why

faiss scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Facebook AI's library for billion-scale vector similarity search.

When to use FAISS

Use FAISS when:

  • Need fast similarity search on large vector datasets (millions/billions)
  • GPU acceleration required
  • Pure vector similarity (no metadata filtering needed)
  • High throughput, low latency critical
  • Offline/batch processing of embeddings

Metrics:

  • 31,700+ GitHub stars
  • Meta/Facebook AI Research
  • Handles billions of vectors
  • C++ with Python bindings

Use alternatives instead:

  • Chroma/Pinecone: Need metadata filtering
  • Weaviate: Need full database features
  • Annoy: Simpler, fewer features

Quick start

Installation

# CPU only
pip install faiss-cpu

# GPU support
pip install faiss-gpu

Basic usage

import faiss
import numpy as np

# Create sample data (1000 vectors, 128 dimensions)
d = 128
nb = 1000
vectors = np.random.random((nb, d)).astype('float32')

# Create index
index = faiss.IndexFlatL2(d)  # L2 distance
index.add(vectors)             # Add vectors

# Search
k = 5  # Find 5 nearest neighbors
query = np.random.random((1, d)).astype('float32')
distances, indices = index.search(query, k)

print(f"Nearest neighbors: {indices}")
print(f"Distances: {distances}")

Index types

1. Flat (exact search)

# L2 (Euclidean) distance
index = faiss.IndexFlatL2(d)

# Inner product (cosine similarity if normalized)
index = faiss.IndexFlatIP(d)

# Slowest, most accurate

2. IVF (inverted file) - Fast approximate

# Create quantizer
quantizer = faiss.IndexFlatL2(d)

# IVF index with 100 clusters
nlist = 100
index = faiss.IndexIVFFlat(quantizer, d, nlist)

# Train on data
index.train(vectors)

# Add vectors
index.add(vectors)

# Search (nprobe = clusters to search)
index.nprobe = 10
distances, indices = index.search(query, k)

3. HNSW (Hierarchical NSW) - Best quality/speed

# HNSW index
M = 32  # Number of connections per layer
index = faiss.IndexHNSWFlat(d, M)

# No training needed
index.add(vectors)

# Search
distances, indices = index.search(query, k)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
