A release-preparation command that increases a package version by a major, minor, or patch increment and updates the related version records.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create a version branch, bump the package version, update the release date and citation file, sync the source version, and update the changelog.
Why use it?

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00052 $0.00746
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00373
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00149
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00075

Security

Grade A, and why

version-bump scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Version Bump

Bump the package version and keep all version references in sync.

Arguments

The user must specify the bump type: major, minor, or patch.

If no bump type is given, ask the user before proceeding.

Steps

0. Create a new branch

Create and switch to a new branch named version-bump-<new_version> (determine the new version by inspecting the current version first, then applying the bump type):

git checkout -b version-bump-<new_version>

1. Bump the package version

Run uv version --bump <bump_type> where <bump_type> is major, minor, or patch.

uv version --bump <bump_type>

Capture the new version from the output (e.g. 0.0.15). Strip the leading v if present.

2. Update CITATION.cff

In CITATION.cff, replace the version: line with the new version, and replace the date-released: line with today's date in YYYY-MM-DD format:

version: "<new_version>"
date-released: "<today_date>"

3. Update src/llm_agents_from_scratch/_version.py

Replace the VERSION value with the new version string:

VERSION = "<new_version>"

4. Update CHANGELOG.md

The changelog follows Keep a Changelog format.

  • Find the ## Unreleased heading near the top of the file.
  • Replace it with ## [<new_version>] - <today_date> where <today_date> is today's date in YYYY-MM-DD format.
  • Insert a new ## Unreleased section immediately above the versioned heading, with an empty ### Added subsection:
## Unreleased

### Added

## [<new_version>] - <today_date>

5. Verify changed files

Run git diff --name-only and confirm that only the following files are modified:

  • CHANGELOG.md
  • CITATION.cff
  • pyproject.toml
  • src/llm_agents_from_scratch/_version.py
  • uv.lock

If any other files are modified, stop and report them to the user before proceeding.

6. Commit

Stage the five files above and commit:

git add CHANGELOG.md CITATION.cff pyproject.toml src/llm_agents_from_scratch/_version.py uv.lock
git commit -m "v<new_version>"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
