vcd-waveform-debug

vcd-waveform-debug is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from neveltyc/VCD_ANALYZER. It costs 158 tokens per session (4,098 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command-line analyzer for VCD files, which are digital simulation recordings that show when hardware signals change. It reads the files in a streaming way and supports structured JSON output.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it during RTL hardware debugging to view file information, list signals, dump value changes for a time range, summarize signal activity, compare waveforms, and query signal values.
Why use it?
It lets you inspect simulation results without manually reading a large waveform file. You can find signals, examine changes over time, compare traces, and summarize activity.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00158 $0.04098
Opus 5 $0.00079 $0.02049
Sonnet 5 $0.00032 $0.00820
Haiku 4.5 $0.00016 $0.00410

Security

Grade A, and why

vcd-waveform-debug scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

VCD Waveform Analyzer — Agent Skill

What this tool does

vcd_analyzer.py is a single-file, zero-dependency Python CLI that parses IEEE 1364 VCD files and exposes seven query commands. It reads VCD files in streaming mode (constant memory regardless of file size), handles QuestaSim bit-exploded buses, Extended VCD port states, and malformed/hostile inputs safely.

All commands support --json for structured output. Always use --json when calling from an agent.

Setup (one-time)

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/neveltyc/VCD_ANALYZER/v1.5.0/vcd_analyzer.py -o vcd_analyzer.py
python3 vcd_analyzer.py --version # expect: vcd_analyzer 1.5.0

No pip install, no virtualenv, no dependencies. Python 3.9+.

Decision tree: which command to use

User wants to know...
├─ "What's in this VCD file?"
│ └─ info → file overview, signal count, time span, scopes
├─ "What signals exist?" / "Find signals matching X"
│ └─ list → signal paths with width and type
├─ "What happened between T1 and T2?"
│ └─ dump → raw value-change events in time order
├─ "Which signals are active/static?"
│ └─ summary → per-signal change count, rise/fall edges, unique values
├─ "What is the value of X at time T?"
│ └─ snapshot → all known signal values at one time point
├─ "What changed between T1 and T2?"
│ └─ compare → diff of signal values at two time points
├─ "When does condition C hold?" / "Find handshakes" / "Find state=X"
│ └─ search → condition-based search with three sub-modes:
│ ├─ interval → time ranges where condition is true (no --show)
│ ├─ segment → intervals + observed signal values (with --show)
│ └─ event → per-transition snapshots (with a changed(SIG) term)

Universal options (apply to every command)

Option Effect
--json Always use this. Compact JSON to stdout.
--limit N Max results. Default 500. --limit 0 = unlimited.
--verbose Extra fields (width, type, raw values). Disables default limit.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

vcd-waveform-debug is a skill published in the GitHub repository neveltyc/VCD_ANALYZER (11 stars, last pushed 10d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 158 tokens to every session and 4,098 once invoked, about $0.0008 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
