update-progress

update-progress is a skill for Claude Code from nirecom/agents. It costs 39 tokens per session (284 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A session utility that rewrites session-progress.md with the current state and newly recorded facts. It also reports the file path after updating it.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before handing work to another session or when asked to update the session record.
Why use it?
It keeps hand-overs from losing important progress or decisions made during a coding session.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00039 $0.00284
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00114
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00057
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00028

Measured 2d ago against content hash 7f3d8ff0709c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

update-progress scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

The user-forced form of the [progress check] request; rules/progress-update.md owns what to write.

Procedure

UP-1 — Ensure the file

Run node "$AGENTS_MAIN_ROOT"/bin/progress-file ensure --session $CLAUDE_CODE_SESSION_ID --reason update-progress and take the path it prints.

Exit 2 means the session id is missing or invalid: report that one line to the user and stop.

Exit 1 means session-progress.md could not be created: report that one line to the user and stop.

UP-2 — Update

Read the file, then rewrite the Current state section per rules/progress-update.md.

Add the facts of the four kinds not yet recorded; when there is nothing new, leave them as they are.

Write with the Edit tool only.

UP-3 — Report

Show the user the updated path in one line, and nothing else.

Rules

  • The main conversation does this itself; do not delegate it to a subagent.
  • Emit no workflow step sentinels: this is an out-of-band utility.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
