secondbrain-memory

secondbrain-memory is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from no-carve-only-pizza/secondbrain-oss. It costs 25 tokens per session (282 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Instructions for using a shared SecondBrain memory vault across AI agents and workspaces.

In plain words
What is it for?
Searching related notes at the start of substantial work, checking for stale or conflicting memory, and updating durable project records afterward.
Why use it?
It helps agents recover project context, preferences, decisions, and relevant history instead of relying only on the current conversation.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00025 $0.00282
Opus 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00113
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00056
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00028

Security

Grade A, and why

secondbrain-memory scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Shared SecondBrain memory

Use the SecondBrain vault as persistent memory shared by every AI agent across all workspaces and subfolders.

When the task needs user or workspace history, call MCP memory_search first with top=5 and context_budget_chars=8000 (snippet budget). Read only relevant paragraphs from 1-3 results; use memory_related only when relationships matter. Skip self-contained requests.

Do not preload the core policy, index, user, or current-state files. Read policies only for memory maintenance, correction, audit, or retrieval changes. Use the index as a fallback.

Use memory_audit for stale or conflicting memory. Use memory_eval after retrieval changes. Put uncertain durable questions in AI_CONTEXT/OPEN_QUESTIONS.md instead of inventing an answer.

If MCP is unavailable, run:

secondbrain search "USER REQUEST" --top 5

Before ending, follow OPERATING_RULES.md to update durable canonical memory and append the dated session log. Ordinary personal information may be retained if the vault owner opted in. Never store passwords, API keys, authentication tokens, cookies, recovery codes, or private keys.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

secondbrain-memory is a skill published in the GitHub repository no-carve-only-pizza/secondbrain-oss (1 stars, last pushed 11d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 25 tokens to every session and 282 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
