obsidian-canvas

obsidian-canvas is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ntaffzii/Skill-Agents. It costs 60 tokens per session (446 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for creating and editing Obsidian Canvas files, which are visual boards stored as JSON. It supports notes, links, files, groups, connections, colors, and spatial layouts.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create concept maps, timelines, workflows, dashboards, project boards, arguments, and knowledge graphs in Obsidian.
Why use it?
It helps turn ideas and information into a valid visual map without manually managing the file format or broken connections.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00060 $0.00446
Opus 5 $0.00030 $0.00223
Sonnet 5 $0.00012 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00045

Security

Grade A, and why

obsidian-canvas scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Obsidian Canvas

Use this skill to create valid JSON Canvas files for Obsidian.

Canvas Shape

A canvas file is JSON with:

{
  "nodes": [],
  "edges": []
}

Nodes need stable IDs and position fields:

  • id
  • type
  • x
  • y
  • width
  • height

Common node types:

  • text with text
  • file with file
  • link with url
  • group with label

Edges connect node sides:

  • id
  • fromNode
  • fromSide
  • toNode
  • toSide

Workflow

  1. Identify the canvas purpose

    • Map, timeline, workflow, dashboard, argument, project board, or concept graph.
  2. Choose layout

    • Left to right for process flows.
    • Top to bottom for hierarchy.
    • Hub and spoke for concept maps.
    • Columns for project boards.
  3. Create nodes

    • Use readable dimensions.
    • Keep text concise.
    • Use file nodes for notes that already exist or should be created separately.
  4. Connect edges

    • Use edges only for meaningful relationships.
    • Avoid visual clutter.
    • Use stable IDs such as edge-plan-build.
  5. Validate JSON

    • Ensure valid JSON, no trailing commas.
    • Ensure every edge references existing node IDs.
    • Ensure nodes do not overlap unintentionally.

Rules

  • Do not invent files unless the user asked to create them.
  • Prefer text nodes for new ideas and file nodes for existing notes.
  • Keep coordinates simple and grid-like.

Output Format

End with:

  • Canvas file created or changed
  • Node and edge count
  • Linked files referenced
  • JSON validation result
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

obsidian-canvas is a skill published in the GitHub repository ntaffzii/Skill-Agents (4 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 60 tokens to every session and 446 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
