diagnose-domain

diagnose-domain is a skill for Claude Code from oborseth/Porkbun-MCP. It costs 72 tokens per session (942 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A read-only troubleshooting workflow for domains managed at Porkbun, a domain registrar. It checks domain status, nameservers, DNS records, email delivery, website access, redirects, and HTTPS errors to find why the domain is not working.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to investigate a down website, bounced email, missing DNS changes, SSL errors, or a broken URL forward for a Porkbun domain.
Why use it?
A domain problem can come from expiry, the wrong DNS provider, missing records, or certificate and forwarding settings. Checking these causes in order avoids changing the wrong system before the cause is known.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00072 $0.00942
Opus 5.5 $0.00029 $0.00377
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00188
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00094

Security

Grade A, and why

diagnose-domain scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Diagnose a Porkbun domain

Work out the cause before changing anything. Most problems are one of a few things, and checking them in order usually finds it within a few calls. Explain what you found in plain terms, then offer the fix and wait for the user's OK. This whole skill is read-only until the user agrees to a change.

1. Is it the right domain, and is it active?

Call get_domain.

  • DOMAIN_NOT_FOUND: the domain is not in this Porkbun account. It may be on another account or at another registrar. Ask the user rather than guessing.
  • Look at the status and expireDate. An expired or suspended domain stops resolving; say so plainly.
  • If calls fail with API_ACCESS_DISABLED, the domain is not opted in to API access. Tell the user how to turn it on (per domain in Domain Management, or Opt In All Domains in Account Settings › API) and stop until they have.

2. Who answers DNS for it?

Call get_nameservers. The answer decides where every other fix happens.

  • Porkbun's nameservers (*.ns.porkbun.com): the records in list_dns_records are what the world sees. Continue to step 3.
  • Somewhere else (Cloudflare, another host, an old registrar): records edited at Porkbun have no effect. The live records are at that provider. Use scan_dns_records to see what it actually publishes, and tell the user the fix belongs there, or offer to move DNS to Porkbun (see the move-dns-to-porkbun skill).
  • If get_cloudflare_domain_status shows the domain moved to the user's Cloudflare account, use the Cloudflare record tools instead.

3. Website problems

  1. list_dns_records: is there an A, AAAA, ALIAS or CNAME at the apex and at www? A site needs one at each name people type.
  2. Hosted at Porkbun? get_hosting shows whether Secure Static Hosting is ACTIVE; list_hosting_files shows whether an index.html is at the top.
  3. Check for a URL forward with list_url_forwards. A forward and an A record on the same name conflict.
  4. Recent change? list_dns_restore_points and diff_dns_restore_point show what changed and when. A record deleted by mistake can be put back with restore_dns_zone (with the user's OK).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
